History Of Fayetteville - Timeline


Long before European settlement, the area was inhabited for over 12,000 years by indigenous Siouan-speaking tribes.

In 1735, the original Mallett House was built. It was originally owned by Daniel Mallett, who later gave it to his brother, Peter Mallett, a textile mill owner. In 1736, a large colony of Highland Scots from Argyllshire, western Scotland, settled. In 1739, the settlement was known as a trading center for Highland Scots.

In 1755, John Newberry built a gristmill and a tavern. In 1756, a trading post was established called Cross Creek by Hugh Fullerton and Richard Lynn. In 1762, the settlers established a trading village they called Campbellton. In 1780, a Methodist Church was established.

In 1783, Cross Creek and Campbellton merged and was named the town of Fayetteville, after the Frenchman Marquis de Lafayette, who supported the American cause during the American Revolution. The Mansard Roof House was built by Frank W. Thornton built the house as a rental property. In 1785, Cross Creek Cemetery was established.

In 1788, the Cool Spring Tavern was built. It is believed to be the oldest existing building still standing in the city. In 1789, the Fayetteville Gazette newspaper was published. The State House was built and the town briefly serves as state capital and hosts the General Assembly.

In 1793, the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry Company was fouded. It still exists and is a volunteer military unit. The original Phoenix Masonic Lodge was built. In 1794, the Fayetteville Library Society was incorporated. In 1797, the Sandford House was built by Duncan McLeran.

In 1798, the Heritage Square was built. It is a historical district that preserves three historic buildings, owned and maintained by The Woman's Club of Fayetteville. (The Sandford House, The Baker-Haigh-Nimocks House, and The Oval Ballroom).

In 1800, Barge's Tavern was built. It was a place for public discussions, mainly about protesting British rule. In 1801, the Halliday-Williams House was built by the businessman Robert Halliday. In 1804, the Baker-Haigh-Nimocks House was built.

In 1805, the Police Department was established. In 1813, the Schenck-Warlick Mill was established. In 1816, the Fayetteville Observer newspaper served the town and the surrounding region. In 1817, the St. John's Episcopal Church was founded. In 1824, the Lafayette Hotel was built. In 1825, Marquis de Lafayette visited Fayetteville.

In 1829, a courthouse was built. In 1830, the original James Kyle house was build but burned in a fire in 1831. The Mallet Rogers House was rebuilt. The Oval Ballroom was built as an add-on to the grand Halliday-Williams House.

In 1831, a fire destroyed over 600 buildings, including homes, stores, banks, and churches. In 1832, the Market House was erected on the site of the old State House, which was destroyed in the fire the year before. It was a hub for trading and it also served as a primary site for slave auctions. A Fire Department was established. The Donaldson Academy school for young men was established. The Sandford House was purchased bank cashier John Sandford.

In 1835, the Colton-Clark-Monaghan House was built by Simeon Colton, the first principal of Donaldson Academy. In 1837, a new county courthouse was built. In 1840, the Henry McLean House was built. Henry McLean was a businessman who was involved in numerous business and real estate ventures.

In 1841, Fayetteville was officially incorporated. In 1845, the Gas Company was established and the Library Institute was founded. In 1847, the Hale House was built. Edward Jones Hale was a journalist, publisher, and owner of The Fayetteville Observer. In 1848, the Taylor-Utley House was built by William Taylor. William Taylor was a merchant.

In 1849, a plank road was chartered. In 1851, the McMillian-Rankin House was completed. It was built for John Waddell Jr. Twenty years later, Daniel McMillan bought the house and it remained in the McMillan family for around 50 years when Claude Rankin, a cashier at Cumberland Savings and Trust Co. and assistant treasurer of the Cape Fear Fair Association purchased it.

In 1855, the Kyle House was rebuilt and completed. James Kyle was a merchant and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church In 1857, merchant Joseph Utley purchased the Taylor-Utley House. In 1858, Edward J. Lilly constructed the the Fair Oaks House. The Phoenix Masonic Lodge Number 8 was rebuilt. In 1865, Union Army under General Sherman occupied the town and destroyed the Confederate arsenal.

In 1867, the Howard School was founded to educate black children. The Fayetteville National Cemetery was established. In 1877, the State normal school for negroes was established. In 1880, the E.A. Poe Brick Company was established. In 1881, Bond E. Sedberry established the Sedberry's Drug Store.

In 1886, the Sedberry-Holmes House was built by pharmacist and businessman Bond E. Sedberry. In 1890, the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway Passenger Depot was built. In 1894, the construction of the Evans Metropolitan AME Zion Church was completed. In 1895, Fayetteville had electric street lights.

In 1897, the 1897 Poe House was built. Edgar Allan Poe was a businessman who ran the Poe Brick Company. (Not the famous author). The Holt-Harrison House was built. Walter L. Holt was a textile industrialist and served as president and treasurer of the Fayetteville Lakeview Mills. He established four textile mills in the town.

In 1900, the population was approximately 4,600. In 1907, the William McDiarmid House was built. William McDiarmid was a prominent wholesale and retail lumber dealer. The Hay Street United Methodist Church was built. In 1908, the New Dixie motion picture theatre opened. (The Cameo Art House Theatre building).

In 1910, Jewish families formed Congregation Beth Israel. In 1911, the Charles Rose House was built. Charles Rose was local attorney and community leader. In 1915, Orange Street School was established. In 1918, U.S. Army established Camp Bragg. In 1923, the Dr. A.S. Rose House was constructed. In 1925, the Mission of M.E. Church was established.

In 1926, the Cumberland County Courthouse was built. In 1932, a public library was established. In 1935, Fayetteville Little Theatre opened. In 1939, WFNC radio begian broadcasting, and the Fayetteville State Teachers College was established. In 1941, the Colony Theater opened. In 1945, a fire destroyed the George and Jennie Sodder residence. 5 Children died.

In 1948, WFLB radio began broadcasting. In 1951, Gary Hall Sr. was born in the city. He is a former swimmer and a three-time Olympic medalist. In 1952, the U.S. military Psychological Warfare Center was established. In 1953, a High school opened. In 1955, WFLB-TV was the first television station in the city. In 1956, the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra was established.

In 1960, the world famous actress Julianne Moore was born in Fort Bragg, Fayetteville. In 1969, the Fayetteville State Teachers College was formally designated as Fayetteville State University.

In 1973, George Floyd was born in the city. Protests against police brutality spread across the United States after he was murdered in 2020 by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bill Clinton moved to the city and began teaching at the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville.

In 1975, the Cross Creek Mall opened. Bill and Hillary Clinton were married in the city. (Married in their living room). In 1988, the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex was established. In 1989, Cape Fear Botanical Garden was established, and the Monarch Stadium, a college football stadium, opened.

In 1997, the Crown Complex multi-purpose venue opened. In 2000, the Airborne and Special Operations Museum was established. In 2002, the Fayetteville Marksmen ice hockey team was founded. In 2026, there were 209,496 people living in the city.
