Westminster is located in the north-central part and is the eighth largest city in the U.S. State of Colorado. The city is a suburb of Denver, located in Adams and Jefferson counties.

History Of Westminster - Timeline


In 1850, the area that would become Westminster was home to Arapaho Indians.

In 1858, gold was discovered in the area which attracted national attention. In 1862, the Homestead Act created opportunities for settlers to claim land in the area. In 1863, Pleasant DeSpain arrived from Kentucky and settled in the area.

In 1869, the Churches Ranch was established by George Henry and Sarah H. Church. In 1870, Pleasant DeSpain built a home and planted orchards and established a farm on 160 acres. The settlement grew into a small farming village locally known as DeSpain Junction. It was a crucial agricultural shipping point and farming community, later renamed Harris before becoming the City of Westminster.

In 1871, Edward Bruce Bowles and his wife Mahala began the construction of their house, the Bowles House. At first it was a wood frame cabin but later turned into a brick house. In 1876, the Bowles House was completed.

In 1881, the Denver, Western and Pacific Railway arrived and it turned DeSpain Junction into a shipping and agricultural hub. In 1885, the real estate developer Charles J. Harris arrived and purchases the DeSpain farm. He subdivided it for fruit farmers, and renamed the community Harris.

In 1892, the construction of the Westminster University building began but due to economic depressions the building wasn't completed until many years later. The construction of the Harris Park School began.

In 1908, the Westminster University building was completed and opened for its first class of 60 students. The post office was renamed from Harris post office to Westminster post office. In 1910, the William J. Gregory House was built. William J. Gregory served as a Professor at the Westminster University.

In 1911, Westminster was officially incorporated as a town. The residents voted to change the name from Harris to Westminster to honor the university. The Police Department was established.

In 1912, the Shoenberg Farm was completed. It was a large dairy and poultry operation, originally built by Louis Dudley Shoenberg to supply dairy and produce to a nearby tuberculosis sanitarium.

In 1913, the Westminster Grange Hall 184 was built and served as the social, civic, and agricultural heart of Westminster. In 1914, the Warne Family Barn was built.In 1919, the construction of the Standley Lake Dam and Reservoir was completed. In 1920, the Pillar of Fire church acquired the Westminster University building.

In 1921, the Tepper family took over Shoenberg Farm. In 1928, Pillar of Fire began broadcasting KPOF radio station. In 1929, the Union High School opened. In 1934, a volunteer fire department was established. In 1957, Westminster was incorporation as a city.

In 1961, a City Hall opened. In 1977, the Westminster Mall opened. In 1988, the Westminster City Hall bell tower was completed. In 1995, the Butterfly Pavilion insect zoo opened. In 2012, the Drury Plaza Hotel was built. In 2018, the Central Plaza public gathering space in downtown was completed.

In 2021, the Origin Hotel, a modern boutique hotel, opened. In 2026, there were 115,302 people living in the city.
