While common people might think that muslim terrorist are all the same, the truth is there are many islamist extremist groups around the world. This article lists the top five Islamist Extremist Groups Around the World.
Hezbollah is a military group that is based in Lebanon. Their name literally translates into "Party of Allah". What started as a small-numbered military group became a powerful organization acquiring seats in the Lebanese government and even has its own satellite-television station. The prime purpose of the group is the eradication of the state of Israel and it has also been said that the group's 1985 Arabic manifesto contains the following passage, "our struggle will end only when this entity [Israel] is obliterated ". The group's funding, according to them, primarily comes from donations by Muslims. Iran and Syria also gives them support through financial aids, weapons and trainings.
Hamas is a Palestinian Islamic organization that operates in Palestinian territories. Like Hezbollah, they also have the goal to eliminate Israel occupation in the Palestine area. The name of the group is translates into enthusiasm. Hamas has been credited with the killing of 400 Israelis and have conducted 425 attacks against Israel. The group also has a record of attacking civilians which caused. Hamas' funding has changed over time and they have been documented to have financial backers in Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Egypt.
3. Boko Haram
Boko Haram is another terrorist group based in Nigeria. They have been credited with the deaths of more than 5,000 civilians between July 2009 and June 2014. The group seeks to establish an Islamic State in Nigeria to be led by Caliph Ibrahim. They are in clear opposition of the Christians living in Nigeria and they are known to kill people who engage in practices not advised in the Islam religion. It is interesting to note that their founder, Mohammed Yusuf, also suggests that the theory that the earth is round should be rejected because it violates Islamic teaching. Officially, their name is Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'Awati Wal-Jihad and means "People Committed to the Prophet's Teachings for Propagation and Jihad".
4. Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS)
A terrorist group that operates in the Middle East and claims to have religious authority over Muslims all across the world. It was reported that ISIS had at least 4,000 fighters in Iraq and according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, they have increased their military numbers to 30,000. But the Kurds say that the estimates are far too low, and that ISIS had at least 200,000 fighters in November 2014. ISIS also attacks other denominations of Islam like Shia Muslims. ISIS orders people under their territory to live under their interpretation of Sunni Islam and the Sharia law. Failure to comply with these would result to death usually through torture and mutilation. Recently they have beheaded American journalist James Foley and declared that they will kill more Americans and spread violence in America if the US does not call off their troops from Iraq and stop their military offensive.
The name Al-Qaeda literally translates to "The Base". The group is infamous for its attack of the World Trade Center which resulted into the death of about 3,000 people. Osama Bin Laden is one of the founders and acts as a leader of the group. The death of Bin Laden has resulted into the dwindling numbers of the group with some of them fighting with each other.
