History Of Surprise - Timeline

Thousands of years before the first white settler came, the land was inhabited by the ancient Hohokam tribe. In 1450, the Hohokam culture began to decline and various other Indian tribes inhabited or utilized the region, which was characterized by harsh desert, and mountains.

In 1539, the Frensh missionary Fray Marcos de Niza explored the area. In 1700, the Spanish missionary Father Eusebio Kino explored the area.

In 1937, the area was rural, undeveloped, and part of the vast agricultural land in the West Valley. General Forney Odin and family, and the Mount Family are believed to be the only families who lived in the area.

In 1938, Flora Mae Statler purchased one square mile of farmland, and founded the town "Surprize" spelled with a z. She was the daughter of Charles Gillett, a businessman and a member of the first City Council in Glendale. For decades, Homer Charles Ludden, a real estate developer, was credited as the city's founder. However, property records discovered in 2010 revealed that Flora Mae Statler purchased the land on May 17, 1938, before she even met her husband Ludden. The town was created to provide affordable housing for agricultural workers.

In 1940, roughly 20 people had come and settled in the area. In 1941, more settlers arrived for employment opportunities in farming and for work at the new nearby Luke Air Force Base. The Fulcher Family built a house.
