Glendale is located in the south-central part and is the sixth largest city in the U.S. State of Arizona It is a suburb of Phoenix. The city is known for State Farm Stadium, the home of NFL's Arizona Cardinals.

The city has a charming old town vibe and the downtown is famous for its concentration of around 80 antique shops and boutiques. The city was incorporated in 1910.

History Of Glendale - Timeline


Thousands of years before the first white settler came, the land was part of the expansive territory inhabited by ancient Native American cultures, most notably the Hohokam.

In 1877, William Henry Bartlett purchased 640 acres of land. He was a wealthy grain broker who nine years later established the Sahuaro Ranch. In 1880, William John Murphy arrived. He was the key figure for building the 40-mile Arizona Canal that made settlement possible in the area.

In 1881, the first structure in what was to become the Sahuaro Ranch was built. In 1884, the area was mainly occupied by Hispanic settlers. In 1885, the Arizona Canal was completed and the desert region now had water. In 1886, William Henry Bartlett settled and established the Sahuaro Ranch.

In 1887, William John Murphy sold land and water rights and named the area Glendale. In 1891, William Henry Bartlett controlled over 2,000 acres in the area around his Sahuaro Ranches. In 1892, the town was established as a "Temperance Colony" for industrious, sober people. A post office was established.

In 1893, the Forney House was built. In 1894, Jonas McNair established a butcher shop. In 1895, the Main House on William Henry Bartlett's Sahuaro Ranch was built. The Humphrey and Davidson Building was built. S. Humphrey and A. Davidson were businessmen and agricultural shipping agents, and built it for their growing dry-goods business. The Sante Fe Railroad Depot was built. The Memorial Park Cemetery was established. The Glendale Grammar School was built.

In 1897, the Jonas McNair House was built. The original Manistee Ranch was built. Herbert W. Hamilton built it as a home for his family. In 1898, the E.C. Bunch House was built. He was a a teacher and served as a Justice of the Peace. The C.C. Burkholder House was built. Burkholder served as a minister for the River Brethren Church. The Methodist Church Parsonage House was built.

In 1906, the Glendale beet sugar factory was built. In 1909. the Glendale State Bank was established. The first telephones were installed. The Gillett Building was completed. Charles Gillett was a businessman and served as a member of Glendale's first City Council. In 1910, the town of Glendale was incorporated, and the Police Department was established. The William Weigold House was built. William Weigold was a director of the Glendale State Bank. The Ray Wiegold House was built. Ray Weigold was a building contractor and brother to William Weigold.

In 1911, the Glendale High School was founded, and the Crystal open air picture show opened. The town got electric trolleys. In 1912, a Fire Department was established with volunteers. The Glendale High School was constructed. The Nunez House was built. It was one of the first homes built in what was then called "Mexican Town". The Glendale News was published.

In 1917, the Flagpole Library was established. In 1918, the First National Bank was built. In 1919, the First Baptist Church Parsonage House was built. Reverend C.M. Northrup was the first pastor to reside there. Robert Fultz built the Robert W. Cole Building and Mr. Cole opened a general store.

In 1924, the Dominic Sanita House was built. Dominic Sanita was a prominent businessman. In 1926, the George O'Dowdy Rental Cottage was built. George O. Dowdy was a property owner and a builder. The Saturday Shopper newspaper was published. (The Glendale Herald). In 1930, the Collins House was builtn and the Town of Glendale becomes the City of Glendale.

In 1931, the Cook-Chisum House was built. In 1938, a second library was built. In 1941, the Thunderbird Field was built. It was a flight training school. More than 15,000 pilots from the U.S., Britain, China, and Canada were train there during the WW2.

In 1952, the Jack Shawver House was built. (The Keist Office Building). Jack Shawver was a partner of the Shawver Brothers Tillage Company, who specialized in custom tillage, land leveling, and farming. In 1957, the Melvin E. Sine House was built. Melvin Eugene Sine was a prominent educator and school principal. In 1960, the Evan Mecham House was built. Evan Mecham was a businessman and the 17th governor of Arizona.

In 1970, the Apollo High School opened. In 1971, a third library was built in Murphy Park. In 1977, the Independence High School was established. In 1979, the Westwind Drive-In opened. (Nine screens, open-air movie). In 1987, Glendale's Main Library was built. In 1993, the Arrowhead Towne Center opened. In 1999, the Civic Center opened. In 2003, the indoor entertainment arena, Desert Diamond Arena, opened.

In 2006, the State Farm Stadium opened. It is the home of the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL. In 2025, the Mattel Adventure Theme Park opened. In 2026, there were 258,143 people living in the city.
