In 1885, the completion of the Arizona Canal provided necessary irrigation for agriculture to the area. William John Murphy, who had worked on the Arizona Canal, recruited settlers to begin a community in the area.

In 1886, Albert J. and Elizabeth Straw were the very first to establish residency in the area. The Straw family were immigrants from Pinxton, England. The same year, four families from Peoria, Illinois, settled, and named the new community after their hometown.
