Casper, Wyoming


Casper is located in the central-eastern part and is the second largest city in the U.S. State of Wyoming. The Oil City. The City of Casper has a long history of oil and cowboy culture. Today the city has a vibrant mix of western traditions and outdoor recreation options. They have 42 parks, the Hogadon Ski Area, and the Casper Events Center, which is the largest indoor venue in Wyoming. The city is the financial center for a vast region of Wyoming.

History Of Casper - Timeline


In 1847, the Mormons established a ferry across Platte River. Several ferries offered passage across the North Platte River. In 1859, a bridge and trading post was built. Fort Caspar, named after Lt. Caspar Collins, was also built that year. It was a military post of the United States Army.

In 1865, Lt. Caspar Collins was killed near the Fort Caspar by Indians. In 1867, the United States Army abandoned Fort Caspar. In 1888, the village was founded and the newspaper, the Casper Weekly Mail, was published. In 1889, Casper was incorporated as a town. In 1890, the Stone Ranch Stage Station opened. In 1891, the newspaper, the Casper Star-Tribune, was founded. In 1895, the first oil refinery was built.

In 1902, the town had telephones. In 1905, a library opened. In 1907, the Bishop House was built. In 1910, the town boomed with the booming oil and refining businesses. Workers now came from Europe and from other parts of the world. In 1911, a hospital opened. In 1912, the first paid firefighter was hired. In 1914, the Masonic Temple, in downtown, was build. In 1918, the first gasoline pipeline began operation from Salt Creek to Casper.

In 1920, the Church of Saint Anthony was completed. In 1921, the Fire Department Station No. 1 and the Rialto Theater was built. In 1922, Texaco built a refinery. In 1924, the new Natrona County High School opened. In 1932, the Casper Federal Building was completed. In 1938, the North Casper Clubhouse was built. In 1940, the present county building was constructed. In 1945, Casper College was established. In 1951, First Southern Baptist Church was formed. In 1959, US Vice-President under George W. Bush, Richard Cheney, graduated from Natrona County High School. In 1963, a school for deaf students was constructed. In 1982, the Casper Events Center was built.
