Winston-Salem, North Carolina


Winston-Salem is located in the north-western part and is the fifth largest city in the U.S. State of North Carolina. The city is famous for its tobacco heritage, and today for its arts and innovations.

The city is ranked as one of the most affordable places in the U.S. to live in. Residents voted to merge the two towns, and in 1913 the towns became the city of Winston-Salem.

History Of Winston-Salem - Timeline


Thousands of years before the first European came to the area it was inhabited by various Native American groups.

In 1752, Bishop August Gottlieb Spangenberg explored and claimed the area for the Moravian Church. In 1753, fifteen German-speaking Protestants of the Moravian Church arrived in todays Salem and founded the settlement of Bethabara.

In 1759, the village of Bethania was founded on the northwest edge of todays Winston-Salem. In 1766, Old Salem historic district was settled. The Salem Square, a grass-covered public square, was built. In 1769, the Single Brothers' House was built. It was built to serve unmarried men. At the age of 13-14, Salem boys left their parents to live in the house and were expected to begin training for their ultimate professions.

In 1771, a Moravian Cemetery was established, known as God's Acre. In 1784, the Salem Tavern was built. It was the first public inn in the villige, offering hospitality in the growing population. In 1788, the Bethabara Moravian Church was built. In 1791, Salem Tavern hosted President George Washington during his Southern tour.

In 1800, the new Home Moravian Church was in use. In 1802, Salem Academy for girls was founded. In 1829, the Middleton House was built. John Middleton owned a plantation. In 1830, the Christian Thomas Shultz House was built. In 1836, the Arista Cotton Mill Complex was built. (Salem Cotton Manufacturing Company). In 1843, a Fire Company was established.

In 1852, a plank road was built between Fayetteville and tne village at Bethania. (The Fayetteville and Western Plank Road). In 1856, the town of Salem was incorporated, and the Western Sentinel newspaper was published. In 1859, the town of Winston was incorporated. In 1860, the Old German Baptist Brethren Church was built. In 1861, St. Philips Moravian Church was built in Salem.

In 1866, the First National Bank of Salem was established. In 1872, T.J. Brown opened the first tobacco sales warehouse. Pleasant Henderson Hanes and his brother John Wesley Hanes started P.H. Hanes and Co. in Winston to make chewing tobacco.

In 1874, Richard Joshua Reynolds bought land in Winston. The first part of H. D. Poindexter Houses was built. Henry Dalton Poindexter was a businessman. In 1875, Richard Joshua Reynolds started his tobacco factory, R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (the Little Red Factory), in Winston. In 1879, the Wachovia National Bank was established in Winston.

In 1883, the James Mitchell Rogers House was built. Mr Rogers was a lawyer and politician. In 1884, the Conrad-Starbuck House was built. John Calvin Conrad was a leader in the Moravian community.

In 1889, the US Post Office began referring the two towns together as Winston-Salem. In 1890, the Twin-City Daily Sentinel newspaper was in print. In 1893, the S. G. Atkins House was built. Dr. Simon Green Atkins was the founder of the Slater Industrial Academy for African-American students. The S. J. Nissen Building was built. In 1896, a courthouse was built. In 1897 the Journal newspaper was published. In 1899, the United States Post Office Department established the Winston-Salem post office in Winston.

In 1900, Winston and Salem were still separated. Both were growing towns with a combined population around 13,650. In 1901, the William Allen Blair House was built. William Allen Blair was an educator and served as superintendent of the Slater State Normal School. In 1905, the Winston-Salem Twins baseboll team played in the Virginia-North Carolina League.

In 1907, the Chatham Manufacturing Mill was built. In 1911, the Cicero Francis Lowe House was built. Cicero Francis Lowe was a secretary of the Brown-Rogers Hardware Company. In 1912, Salem Town Hall was built.

In 1913, the towns of Salem and Winston merge to form Winston-Salem. In 1915, the Mars Hill Baptist Church was built. The O'Hanlon commercial building was built. In 1917, the Reynolda House was built by Richard Joshua Reynolds and his wife Katharine Smith Reynolds. In 1918, the construction of the Goler Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church began.

In 1923, the North Carolina Baptist Hospital opened. (Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist medical center). The Richard J. Reynolds High School opened. (The Richard J. Reynolds Magnet School for the Visual and Performing Arts). In 1924, the Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church was built. (Originally East Fourth Street Baptist Church). The construction of the R. J. Reynolds Memorial Auditorium was completed.

In 1925, the Thurmond and Lucy Chatham House was built. It was built for Congressman and businessman Richard Thurmond Chatham. In 1926, the Forsyth County Courthouse, and the Winston-Salem City Hall were built. In 1927, the Nissen Building, a 18-story skyscraper, was built, and the Miller Municipal Airport (Smith Reynolds Airport) was established.

In 1928, the Union Station was built. In 1929, the Reynolds Building was built. The scyscraper served as the headquarter for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. In 1930, WSJS radio begian broadcasting in the city. The Shell Service Station was constructed. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1931, Atkins High School was built.

In 1932, the construction of the Graylyn Estate was completed. Bowman Gray Sr and his wife Nathalie Lyons Gray lived there. Bowman Gray Sr was a chairman of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. In 1935, the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem was established. In 1937, WAIR radio began broadcasting in the city. In 1940, the A. Robinson commercial building was built to house African-American businesses.

In 1949, the world fanous actress and singer Pam Grier was born in the city. She was described by Quentin Tarantino as the first female action star. In 1951, the Flamingo Drive-In cinema opened. In 1952, the Temple Emanuel synagogue was built In 1953, WSJS-TV began broadcasting in the city.

In 1956, the Wake Forest University, a private research university, moved to Winston-Salem from the town Wake Forest. In 1962, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s visited the city and gave a speech at Wake Forest University’s Wait Chapel. In 1965, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts opened. The Parkway Theatre opened.

In 1966, the Wachovia Building (Winston Tower) was built. The skyscraper was the tallest building in North Carolina. The singer-songwriter Ben Folds was born in the city. In 1971, the Black Panther Party Winston-Salem Chapter was established. In 1975, the Hanes Shopping Mall opened. In 1979, WGNN-TV began broadcasting in the city.

In 1982, the RJR Plaza Building was built. The skyscraper was built for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. In 1989, the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, a multi-purpose arena, opened. In 1995, the construction of Wachovia Center bank building was completed. (100 North Main Street). In 2026, there were 255,769 people living in the city.
