Albany, New York
Albany is located in the east-central part and is the sixth largest city in the U.S. State of New York. It is the capital and the oldest city in the State, and one of the oldest cities in the country. The city is known for its walkable downtown, architecture, and rich history.

History Of Albany, NY - Timeline
In 1540, French fur-traders became the first Europeans to visit the area. They built a stone fort on Castle Island. In 1609, Henry Hudson came and claimed the area for the Dutch. In 1614, Fort Nassau was built as a fur trading post. In 1624, the first permanent settlers, from France and Netherlands, built Fort Orange. It replaced Fort Nassau.
In 1652, the Dutch settlers founded the village of Beverwijck.In 1642 a ferry was established. In 1664, the English captured the village and renamed it to Albany. In 1686, Albany was incorporated and around 500 people now lived there.
In 1700, around 1000 people lived in the city. In 1717, the first building of St. Peter's Episcopal Church was built. In 1728, the 48 Hudson Avenue/the Van Ostrande–Radliff House was built. It is the oldest house in the city. In 1736, the Quackenbush House was built. In the 1760s, the streets had oil streetlights. In 1765, the United States Senator and general, Philip Schuyler, built the Schuyler Mansion on Catherine Street.
In 1771, the Albany Gazette newspaper begigan its publication. It was the first newspaper in the city. In 1782, general George Washington visited. In 1787, the Cherry Hill house was built by Colonel Philip Kiliaen van Rensselaer. In 1797, Albany became the permanent capital of New York. In 1799, the First Reformed Church was completed.
In 1800, around 5500 people lived in the city. In 1807, a steamboat line was established from between Albany and NYC. In 1815, the Old Albany Academy Building was built. It was a day school for boys. In 1831, the railroad between Albany and Schenectady was established. In 1845, the Nut Grove, also known as the William Walsh House was built.
In 1847, the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence was built. Stephen Myers was born a slave, and around 1818, he was given his freedom. Stephen Myers was an important contributor and agent of the Underground Railroad. In 1850, the Church of the Holy Innocents was built. In 1852, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception was completed, and the James Hall Office was built.
In 1856, the New York State Executive Mansion was built. The house is the official residence of the governor of the U.S. state of New York. In 1869, the Walter Merchant House was completed. Walter Merchant was a local produce and grain dealer. In 1870, the St. Mary's Church was built. In 1879, the Old Post Office building was completed. In 1880, the City Hall building was built.
In 1881, Albany had electric streetlights installed. In 1883, City Hall opened. In 1885, the Abrams Building was built. In 1888, the Cathedral of All Saints was completed. In 1899, the New York State Capitol building was completed.
In 1900, the Union Station opened, and around 98.000 people lived in the city. In 1902, the Benjamin Walworth Arnold House and Carriage House was built. Benjamin Walworth Arnold was a lumber businessman. In 1904, the Albany Trust Company commercial building was completed. In 1914, the Emmaus United Methodist Church was completed.
In 1918, the SUNY Plaza building was completed (formerly the Delaware and Hudson Railroad Company Building).In 1923, the Harmanus Bleecker Library was built. In 1928, Albany International Airport opened to commercial service. In 1931, the Palace Theatre was completed. In 1934, the Bleecker Stadium opened. In 1939, the actor William Devane was born in the city of Albany.
In 1942, Erastus Corning became the mayor of Albany. He won every election and served until his death in 1983. In 1973, the Erastus Corning Tower was completed. It is the tallest skyscraper in the city. In 1990, Dion Lewis was born in Albany. He won Super Bowl LI with the New England Patriots. In 2010, around 98,000 people lived in the city.
