History Of Metairie - Timeline


Long before the first European came, the area was inhabited and used by indigenous peoples, especially the Acolapissa, who used the elevated ridge formed by Bayou Metairie as a travel route.

In 1682, the French explorer and fur trader, Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle traveled through the area. In 1718, the French government issued land grants for agricultural use.

In 1719, Joseph Nicholas, and Louis Chauvin were granted land in modern-day Jefferson Parish and Metairie. They established a successful plantation. European settlers, including French, Spanish, and Germans, arrived and established plantations and farms, and supplied food and materials to nearby New Orleans.

In 1720, more French settlers arrived and established small tenant farms and built cabins. The name Metairie comes from the French term for a small tenant farm. The farmers supplied produce to New Orleans.

In 1724, Claude Joseph Villars Du Breuil built a plantation. In 1751, Gui de Saunhac du Fossat established a plantation. In 1763, Metairie was ceded to Spain. In 1803, Metairie and the rest of Louisiana became part of the United States.

In 1808, Joseph Soniat du Fossat purchased land on the former site of a Tchoupitoulas Indian village. He was a sugar plantation owner. In 1820, Joseph Soniat du Fossat built a grand two-story brick colonial home. In 1829, Fossat built the Soniat House Hotel, originally as a townhouse for his large family.

In 1838, the Metairie Race Course was established. It was a premier horse racing venue known for major thoroughbred. In 1850, Bucktown fishing village in Metairie was established. In 1872, the Metairie Cemetery was established.

In 1903, a streetcar line serving Metairie was established. In 1923, the Longue Vue House and Gardens was established for Edith and Edgar Stern. Edgar was a cotton broker, civic leader, and philanthropist, and Edit was a social activist, and philanthropist.

In 1927, Metairie was incorporated as a city. In 1928, Louisiana Supreme Court struck down the incorporation of Metairie, and it returned to its status as unincorporated.

In 1929, the Metairie Park Country Day School was established by Edith Stern. It is a private, non-denominational, co-educational college preparatory school. In 1942, the current Longue Vue House mansion was completed.

In 1956, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway opened. It connects Metairie to Mandeville, and is the world's longest continuous bridge over water. In 1958, comedian, actress, television host, Ellen DeGeneres, was born in Metairie. In 1959, Jefferson Downs nighttime horse racing track opened.

In 1960, the Lakeside Shopping Center opened. In 1974, the Heritage Plaza building was constructed. In 1976, the current St. Ann Church and National Shrine was completed. In 1980, the St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church was built.

In 1982, Lafreniere Park opened. In 1997, the Zephyr Field facility opened. (Renamed Shrine on Airline, and later the Gold Mine on Airline). It is a 10,000-seat baseball stadium.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck Metairie. Unlike neighboring New Orleans, which suffered catastrophic flooding, Metairie was largely spared from total devastation because the floodwalls on its side of the 17th Street Canal remained intact. In 2015, the Jefferson Performing Arts Center was inaugurated.
