History Of Olathe - Timeline


Long before the first European came, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes. In 1700, French traders and explorers, including fur trappers established trade relationships with Native American tribes.

In 1821, Lone Elm Campground was established. Travelers spent their nights there. The site served as a campground and rendezvous point for people traveling along the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trail. The wagon swales created by the travelers can still be seen.

In 1828, Rev. Isaac McCoy, commissioned by William Clark, surveyed the region in to establish a Shawnee reservation. In 1829, missionary Thomas Johnson established a mission. In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act opened the Kansas Territory to settlers. Many settlers moved into the area from Missouri.

In 1857, the township of Olathe was established. Dr. John T. Barton founds Olathe, choosing the site because of its location on the Santa Fe Trail and the surrounding landscape.

In 1858, due to political instability and to confirm legality, Olathe was reincorporated. James Beatty Mahaffie established a stagecoach stop. In 1859, the city became the county seat of Johnson County.

In 1862, William Quantrill led a surprise raid of guerrilla Confederates against the city, which resulted in a many deaths and the destruction of most of the city. In 1865, the J.B. Mahaffie House was built. James Beatty Mahaffie was a farmer, and entrepreneur. The Olathe Memorial Cementare was established.

In 1866, the Kansas School for the Deaf moved to Olathe. In 1867, the railroad reached Olathe. In 1868, due to questions about the validity of the earlier incorporation, it was re-incorporated again. St. Paul's Catholic Church was built. The Clements Store was established.

In 1869, the I.O. Pickering House was built. Isaac Orlando Pickering was a lawyer, politician, and Civil War veteran. He served as the City Attorney for Olathe and later as its Mayor. The Martin Van Buren Parker House was built. He was an attorney, real estate broker, farmer, and land owner.

In 1870, there were 2,045 residents in the city. A Police Department was established. In 1874, a library was established.

In 1875, the Ensor farm site was built. It was originally a dairy farm established by the Ensor family. Marshall H. Ensor became an industrial arts teacher and amateur radio pioneer. The Snepp Drugstore was established. The Park Cherry Building was built.

In 1878, the Walnut Grove Schoolhouse was built and the first classes were held. In 1881, the Jonathan Dow House was built. Jonathan Dow was a Civil War veteran, and a businessman in Olathe.

In 1892, the Washburn courthouse was dedicated, and it had electric lights. The George Hodges House was originally built. George HHodges was a businessman and politician, and a lumberman.

In 1894, the Albert Ott House was built. He was a merchant, and banker. In 1898, a high school building was completed.

In 1900, roughly 3,000 people lived in the city. In 1901, the Franklin R. Lanter House was built. Franklin R. Lanter was a successful lumber and coal merchant who founded the Lanter Lumber Company. He also served as the city's Mayor, Postmaster, and later as the Johnson County Treasurer and Justice of the Peace.

In 1906. the Pellet Place was built. James Pellett was a banker and served as City Treasurer, County Treasurer, and Mayor of the city. In 1911, a City Hall was built. In 1917, the First United Methodist Church brick structure was erected.

In 1919, the Charles Hyer House (or the Hycrest), was reconstructed (originally the Dow house). Charles H. Hyer was a shoemaker and leatherwork instructor. He was credited with designing the first true cowboy boot.

In 1927, the John P. St. John Memorial High School building was completed. The Trail Theater opened. In 1943, the jazz drummer Richie Pratt was born in the city. He played with Aretha Franklin, Barry White, Monty Alexander, Michel Legrand, Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, the Temptations and among others.

In 1947, the Olathe Fire Protection District was organized. In 1952, the Johnson County Courthouse opened. In 1953, the Olathe Community Hospital opened. In 1954, the Westview Elementary opened. It was one of the first schools in the city to have an African-American teacher.

In 1966, an organized ambulance service started. The MidAmerica Nazarene University was founded by the Church of the Nazarene to provide Christian higher education. In 1968, Santa Fe Trail Junior High opened.

In 1980, the Olathe South High School was constructed. In 1996, Garmin International, a global leader in GPS technology, relocated its headquater to Olathe. In 1997, a 150-store outlet center, the Great Mall of the Great Plains, opened. In 2006, the City acquired the Ensor Park and Museum.

In 2026, there were 145,057 people living in the city.
