Port St. Lucie, Florida
Port St. Lucie, or Port Saint Lucie, is located in the central-eastern part and is the sixth largest city in the U.S. State of Florida. It is a young city and it is known for its stunning beaches and waterways, and as a family-friendly community.
It is one of the safest cities in the state. The city has many parks and tourist attractions. Part of the James Bond film Moonraker was shot here.

History Of Port St. Lucie - Timeline
Long before the first European arrived, indigenous peoples, including the Ais Indians, lived here.
In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leen explored the during his expedition and claimed the land for Spain. In 1565, Pedro Menendez de Avilés established a brief outpost in the region. In 1566, the Spanish named the area St. Lucie and established a fort.
In 1891, a settlement named Spruce Bluff was established. They had citrus and pineapple plantations, built sawmills, a school, and a post office. In 1917, the Peacock House was built. In 1950, there were a few farms in the area and a fishing camp.
In 1952, a hunting lodge was built. In 1956, a few houses were built. Guy and Gladys Clark were among the first who built a house.
In 1958, the General Development Corporation purchased land to create an affordable master-planned retirement community. The company marketed affordable housing, offering a low-cost, installment-plan housing.
In 1959, the General Development Corporation opened its first bridge over the St. Lucie River, and cars now had access to Port St. Lucie.
In 1961, 250 homes had been built and Port St. Lucie was officially incorporated as a city. The Port St. Lucie Methodist Church (now the First United Methodist Church) was built. The Port St. Lucie Country Club resort and golf complex opened. In 1965, the construction of the St. Lucie Catholic Church was completed.
In 1966, the area was becoming known for golf. In 1970, more houses bere built and infrastructure expanded beyond the initial GDC plan. Around 330 people lived in Port St. Lucie. In 1971, The St. Lucie Country Club and Villas hotel operations was leased to the Hilton Corporation and became the St. Lucie Hilton CC Resort.
In 1972, the serial killer Gerard John Schaefer Jr. murdered and mutilated two teenage girls in Port St. Lucie. He was suspected of twenty-six other murders.
In 1973, land and homes were marketed aggressively to northern retirees. In 1974, the Port St. Lucie Branch Library was built. In 1975, the original Fire Station 5 was constructed. Port St. Lucie Elementary School opened. The Brass Sandpiper Restaurant opened.
In 1978, a City Hall was constructed. t>The St. Lucie River was used to film a boat chase scene for the James Bond film Moonraker. In 1979, a Police Department was organized. In 1980, approximately 14,600 people lived in the new city.
In 1983, Jaycee Park was established, featuring a playground, baseball field, and pavilions. The Harborview Park was also established. In 1984, Loyalty Park, Doat Street Park and Veterans Park at Rivergate were established. In 1887, Thomas J. White Stadium opened.
In 1988, the New York Mets began using the Thomas J. White Stadium facility for spring training. The St. Lucie Mets baseball team was established. In 1989, Port St. Lucie High School opened. In 1991, the General Development Corporation filed for bankruptcy.
In 1992, the Girl Scout Friendship Park was established. Sergeant Donald Mahan of the Port St. Lucie Police Department was struck and killed by a vehicle while assisting accident victims on the road. In 1993, the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church was built.
In 1999, 40 homes were destroyed in wildfires. In 2000, there were 88,769 people living in the city. In 2001, a patient at Port St. Lucie Hospital carried out a violent attack that resulted in the deaths of four people. In 2001, the St. Bernadette Catholic Church was built.
In 2003, Tradition Town Hall opened. In 2004, the hurricanes Frances and Jeanne destroyed many homes and businesses. In 2006, Jose Luis Escobedo, Yessica Guerrero Escobedo, and their two young sons was found murdered in Port St. Lucie. Four suspects were arrested and later sentenced.
In 2008, the Civic Center opened. The Landing at Tradition shopping center opened. In 2010, Botanical Gardens opened. In 2015, Forbes Magazine ranked the city as the 20th best place to retire in the U.S.
In 2026, there were 232,491 people living in the city.
