Orlando, Florida


Orlando is located in the central part and is the fourth largest city in the U.S. State of Florida. It is one of the most visited cities in the world. It is ranked as one of the best cities to live in. The city is known for major attractions like Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal Orlando Resort.

About 70 million visitors arrive each year for the attractions the city has to offer. Theme parks, museums, shopping, nightlife, golfing, cultural sites, and other adventures. The Convention Center is the second-largest convention facility in the United States after the McCormick Place in Chicago.

History Of Orlando - Timeline


Before white settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by the Native American Creek and Seminole tribes. In 1513, Juan Ponce de León, a Spanish explorer, is believed to be the first European to explore the area.

In 1838, the U.S. Army Fort Gatlin was built to protect settlers from attacks by Indians. In 1840, a small group of people settled. In 1843, Aaron Jernigan, one of the first settlers in area, cleared land, built a cabin, and planted crops. More settlers came and officially named the village to Jernigan. In 1850, a post office was built. Around 200 people lived in the village.

In 1856, Aaron Jernigan was charged with murder. The people in the village didn't want it to be named after a murderer and Jernigan was renamed Orlando. A theory of the name is that it was for a soldier at Fort Gatlin, Orlando Reeves, who died during sentinel duty. In 1873, Jacob Summerlin bought land in downtown. He filled the land with water and it became a beautiful lake. It was called Sandy Beach but was later renamed Lake Eola.

In 1875, the Town of Orlando incorporated. In 1878, the Orange County Reporter newspaper started. In 1880, the town had railroad service. In 1885, the City of Orlando was incorporated. In 1886, the Black school opened, and a mule-drawn streetcar line operated in downtown. In 1889, the city had electric street lights and the Church Street Train Station was built.

In 1891, the first St. James Parish was built. Back then, it was a wooden structure. In 1892, the Lake Eola Park was created, and the old Orange County Courthouse, a brownstone building, was completed. In 1893, the Dr. P. Phillips House was built.

In 1900, around 2,500 people lived in the city, and the Florida Christian Recorder newspaper started. In 1905, the City Hall building was completed. In 1913, the Grand Theater opened. In 1914, the Tinker Field outdoor baseball stadium was built. In 1916, the J. J. Bridges House was built. In 1918, the Orange General Hospital opened its doors. In 1921, the Beacham Theatre opened. In 1923, the Albertson Public Library opened, and the Angebilt Hotel opened.

In 1924, WDBO radio began broadcasting, and the Orange Court Hotel was built. In 1926, the Jack Kerouac House was built, and the Wells'Built Museum, an African American history museum, was built. In 1927, the old Orange County Courthouse was built, and the St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church was completed. In 1928, the S. Howard Atha House was built, and the Orlando Municipal Airport started operating in the city. In 1934, the John N. Huttig Estate was built. In 1936, the Orlando Stadium opened.

In 1949, the Gatorland theme park opened. In 1954, WDBO-TV broadcasting. In 1956, the Colonial Plaza shopping centre opened. In 1962, the actor Wesley Snipes was born in the city. In 1967, the Disney company started creating their theme parks. In 1971, Disney World officially opened. In 1973, the SeaWorld theme park opened, and the Sentinel Star newspaper began publication. In 1976, the Orlando International Airport began operating.

In 1986, the Peabody Orlando hotel opened. In 1990, the Orlando Weekly newspaper started, and the Universal Orlando theme park opened. In 1991, the Orlando Predators football team was formed.In 1998, the Mennello Museum opened.

In 2002, the Millenia indoor shopping mall opened. In 2007, the Addition Financial Arena opened. In 2010, the Amway Center opened, becoming the new home for the Orlando Magic, and the Orlando City Soccer Club was formed. In 2016, Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people and wounded 58 in a mass shooting at a gay nightclub. In 2017, the Volcano Bay theme park opened.
