History Of Fort Lauderdale - Timeline


Long before the first European arrived, the region was inhabited by the Tequesta Indians

In 1838, the New River Settlement was established as a Second Seminole War fort, named Fort Lauderdale after Major William Lauderdale. Approximately 70 settlers lived there who farmed and traded with the Seminole Indians. In 1842, the fort was abandoned. In 1850, a few families lived in the area.

In 1893, Frank Stranahan arrived to operate a ferry. He established the Fort Lauderdale trading post and built a thriving, fair-trade relationship with the Seminole Indians. The Florida East Coast Railroad was completed.

In 1899, a schoolhouse was built. In 1901, the Stranahan House was built. It served as a trading post, a post office, and home for Frank and Ivy Stranahan. In 1904, the general bridge over the New River was constructed. William Berryhill began trading with alligator skin.

In 1907, the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse was illuminated. The King-Cromartie House was built by Edwin T. King. In 1910, Evergreen Cemetery was established.

In 1911, the city was incorporated. Fort Lauderdale Sentinel newspaper was in print, and the city marshal office was created. In 1912, the North New River Canal was built. A devastating fire destroyed many buildings in the downtown area.

In 1913, a fire station was built. In 1914, the Shippey House was built. Frederick Bleecker Shippey was a County Judge of Fort Lauderdale. In 1917, the Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club building was constructed.

In 1920, the construction of the Bonnet House Museum and Gardens began. It was built for the artists Frederic and Helen Bartlett. In 1925, the Snow-Reed Swing Bridge and Grand Canal Arch Deck Bridge were built.

In 1927, the Fort Lauderdale train station was constructed. In 1928, Port Everglades opened. In 1939, the Florida Theatre opened. In 1942, the Naval Air Station opened. In 1948, a City Hall was built. In 1955, WWIL radio began broadcasting. In 1956, Federal Drive-In cinema opened.

In 1958, the Museum of Art opened. In 1959, the Lockhart Stadium opened. The Broward Community College was founded. In 1960, the New River Tunnel opened. The Sun-Sentinel newspaper was published.

In 1962, the Fort Lauderdale Stadium opened. The Fort Lauderdale Yankees baseball team was formed. In 1963, Fort Lauderdale High School was built. In 1964, Nova Southeastern University opened. In 1965, the Fort Lauderdale Pictorial Life magazine was in print.

In 1967, Parker Playhouse Theater opened. In 1974, the Broward County Library System was established. In 1991, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts opened. In 2003, Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum was founded.

In 2017, five people were killed and six were injured in a a mass shooting. The shooter Esteban Santiago-Ruiz was taken into custody within 85 seconds after he started shooting. Santiago was later diagnosed with schizophrenia.

In 2026, there were 185,604 people living in the city.
