History Of Cape Coral - Timeline


Long before the first European arrived, the area were inhabited by the Calusa, a Native American people of Florida's southwest coast. They built canal systems and lived along the Caloosahatchee River long before modern development.

In 1513, the Spanish explorer Ponce de León explored the area. In 1763, Spain ceded the area to Great Britain. In 1783, Spain regained control of area after the American Revolution. In 1821, the area became a U.S. territory.

In 1900, there were a few settlers, cattlemen, and fishermen in the area. In 1908, Dr. Franklin Miles purchased the land where the downtown area now are located. He used it for agricultural experiments. In 1925, Elam Underhill and Ezra Corbitt, work on grading of Pine Island Road and built the pilings and railings for the Matlacha Bridge.

In 1947, the Ranch House Motel was built by Guy and Lucille Webb to house fishermen. Later it served as the Coral Ridge Funeral Home and Cemetery office. In 1956, real estate developers Jack and Leonard Rosen purchased land in the region.

In 1957, Jack and Leonard Rosen established the Gulf American Land Corporation, bought more land, and began drafting plans for a new community. They did a massive, nation-wide advertising campaign to lure residents to Cape Coral, which they branded a Waterfront Wonderland.

In 1958, Jack and Leonard Rosen began the construction of the new community. Canals were dredged, and soil was used to build up the land. The first eight homes were completed on and the first residents move in.

In 1959, Jack and Leonard Rosen did more intensive marketing. They flew in celebrities such as Bob Hope to promote the development. In 1961, a beach, a yacht club, and a tennis club were established. In 1962, the Fire Department was established.

In 1963, approximately 1,300 buildings were finished and 2,850 people had moved to the new community. A 160 miles of canals was completed. In 1964, the Cape Coral Bridge opened, and the Cape Coral Gardens tourist attraction opened. It featured an Italian and Japanese garden, a children's garden, and a Patriots Garden. There was a, zoo, water ski shows, and dolphin shows. In 1965, Coral Ridge Funeral Home and Cemetery was established.

In 1970, Cape Coral was incorporated as a city, and 10,193 people lived in the city. In 1971, a Police Department was formed. In 1977, Cape Coral Hospital opened. In 1987, Mariner High School opened. In 1991, the Cultural Park Theatre opened. In 1992, Sun Splash Family Waterpark opened.

In 1994, the Cape Coral Sport Complex opened. In 1997, the Midpoint Memorial Bridge opened. In 2010, there were a population of 154,309.

In 2026, there were 215,536 people living in the city.
