History Of Thornton - Timeline


Thousands of years ago, the land was home to ancient Folsom people. Not long before the first Europeans came to the area, the land was used by Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute tribes. In 1700, French trappers hunted for beaver and traded fur in the area.

In 1900, the land that is now Thornton, was primarily utilized for agriculture and ranching. In 1905, Eastlake, in todays Thornton, was an early agricultural and railroad-focused settlement located along the Union Pacific Railroad line.

In 1911, the Lambertson Farm was established. Eastlake was established in todays Thornton. It was an early agricultural and railroad-focused settlement located along the Union Pacific Railroad line. According to Thornton Government, there was a bank, a lumber yard, a grocery store, a mercantile, a post office, and a frozen food storage facility, and a blacksmith in Eastlake.

In 1920, a grain elevator was built In 1923, the Rietzenstein Barn was constructed. In 1950, the area that became Thornton was still primarily open farmland.

In 1952, developer Sam Hoffman purchased land north of Denver to create a planned community. He named the place after Dan Thornton to secure political favor for the new development. Dan Thornton was the Governor of Colorado.

In 1953, the construction of what would become Thornton began, and actress Jane Russell helped promote the first three model homes, which were decorated by her brothers. In 1954, the first houses were completed and around 40 families moved into their new homes. The Glassman family became the city's first official residents. A shopping center opened.

In 1955, 1,200 homes were completed and more than 5,000 people moved to the new town. The Thornton Shopping Center opened.

In 1956, the City of Thornton was officially incorporated, and a police department and a volunteer fire department was established. In 1958, the first official municipal building, city hall, was constructed. A post office opened.

In 1960, the first public library opened. In 1963, Thornton Annual Festival Days, commonly known as Thorntonfest, was first held. In 1967, North Valley Shopping Center opened. In 1975, Thornton High School opened. In 1981, homes and businesses were damaged by an F2 tornado.

In 1987, the actor Mike Manning was born. (Hawaii Five-0, Teen Wolf, The Bay, and more). In 1994, the Margaret W Carpenter Recreation Center opened. In 2017, a gunman killed three people when he opened fire at a Walmart Supercenter. Scott Allen Ostrem was captured and was later sentenced to life in prison.

In 2020, the Original Thornton-88th Station opened. It connected Thornton to the Denver rail network. In 2024, a new Thornton Community Center and Anythink Library opened. In 2026, there were 146,689 people living in the city.
