History Of Lakewood - Timeline


Thousands of years ago, the land was home to ancient Folsom people. Not long before the first Europeans came to the area, the land was used by Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute tribes. In 1542, the earliest recorded European explorer reached the area.

In 1682, French explorers Rene-Robert Cavelier, and Sieur de La Salle, claimed the region. In 1820, American trappers hunted in the area, mostly for beaver, and traded fur. In 1834, settler John Honam built a stone house.

In 1858, the Pikes Peak Gold Rush started, and settlers arrived for gold and farming. In 1864, a major South Platte River flood drived new settlers to the slightly higher elevation of current-day Lakewood. In 1878, the Grant Ranch was built. It was the homestead of Colorado Governor James Benton Grant.

In 1885, the Peterson House was built. In 1888, a volunteer fire department was established. In 1889, Charles Welch and William Austin Hamilton Loveland, platted a 13-block area and give the community its name Lakewood.

In 1891, the railroad was completed and connected the town with Denver. In 1892, a post office opened. In 1898, a school was built.

In 1904, the Denver, Lakewood and Golden Railroad line was purchased by Samuel Newhouse. The Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society was founded. They offered kosher food, and a supportive environment for Yiddish-speaking, observant patients.

In 1906, the Isaac Solomon Synagogue was built. In 1908, the Golden Hill Cemetery was established. In 1909, the Denver, Lakewood and Golden Railroad line was converted to electric power. In 1914, Colorado Christian University was founded.

In 1937, the Lakewood-Mountair Fire Department was established. May Bonfils Stanton created Belmar. She purchased land and properties to create a 750-acre estate that she called Belmar. The estate grounds included a 50 acres manmade lake, gardens, and grazing areas for fallow deer and herds of prize Suffolk and Hampshire sheep.

In 1941, the Denver Ordnance Plant was built. It was a massive World War II munitions facility, produced small-arms ammunition for the war effort. The Denver Federal Center was built. In 1951, the Lakewood Memorial Field was built. In 1952, Lakewood Center shopping mall opened. In 1957, Lakewood High School was established. Davies' Chuck Wagon Diner was built. It is a historic, stainless-steel diner.

In 1966, Villa Italia Mall shopping center opened. In 1969, the city was incorporated. It was named Jefferson City for a short time before voters changed it to Lakewood. Building 710 was constructed. It was designed to withstand a nuclear attack. (Building 710, Defense Civil Preparedness Agency Region 6 Operations Center). In 1968, Pacific Theatres opened. In 1970, the police department was established.

In 1976, the Lakewood on Parade event started. In 2002, Colorado Mills shopping mall opened. In 2004, Belmar, a new mixed-use downtown, opened on the site of the former Villa Italia Mall shopping center. The Cinemark Century Bel Mar 16 opened its doors. In 2011, the St. Anthony Hospital opened.

In 2021, a mass shooting incident impacted both Lakewood and Denver. 47-year-old Lyndon McLeod shot five people and wounded two others. In 2026, there were 156,868 people living in the city.
