Greeley, Colorado
Greeley is located in the north-central part and is the tenth largest city in the U.S. State of Colorado. The city annual celebrates the Greeley Stampede, one of the nation's largest Fourth of July rodeo and Western celebrations.
It is often referred to as a college town due to the University of Northern. The city was founded as a cooperative agricultural enterprise.

History Of Greeley - Timeline
Indigenous tribes, including the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute, lived in the region for thousands of years before European contact. In 1542, Spanish expeditions explored the area. In 1820, the Stephen H. Long Expedition of 1820 explored the area.
In 1859, Horace Greeley visited the area during the Gold Rush. Horace Greeley was the founder of the New-York Tribune newspaper. In 1860, farmers dug irrigation ditches in the Greeley area. The area (called Latham) was a crucial stagecoach station on the Overland Trail, and a headquarters for government troops. In 1862, a post office operated in the area.
In 1869, Nathan C. Meeker promoted founding a farming colony in Colorado with backing from Horace Greeley. Nathan C. Meeker was a journalist, entrepreneur, and Indian agent for the federal government.
In 1870, Greeley was founded by Nathan C. Meeker, who organized the Union Colony with approximately 450 settlers. John F. Sanborn drew the first plan for the town and created the towna original layout. Meeker home was built, and a post office was established. The Greeley Tribune was founded. John F. Sanborn platted Lincoln Park.
In 1871, Greeley was organized as a town. The Fire Department and Police Department were founded. The Joseph A. Woodbury House was built. Joseph Woodbury was active in politics and local organizations, including serving on the town board and later town council and mayor. He served as treasurer of the Society of Union Colony Pioneers.
The Nettleton-Mead House was built for Edwin S. Nettleton. He was a civil and irrigation engineer who laid out the city of Greeley. He designed and built its first irrigation canals and later became a nationally recognized expert in irrigation for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In 1873, the Macy/Jones Building was constructed. Thomas G. Macy was a farmer, and a carpenter and sexton. In 1874, the Linn Grove Cemetery was established. In 1878, the Adelaide Curtis House was built.
In 1879, Nathan Meeker was killed after a conflict with Ute tribe. The Boyd House was built. David Boyd served as second president of the Union Colony, president of the Greeley School Board, superintendent of Weld County Schools, and State Senator.
In 1881, Charles White established the White-Plumb Farm, and produced alfalfa, sugar beets, and potatoes. In 1882, the Oasis Hotel was built. The Gables house was originally built.
In 1883, telephones were introduced to the town. The Oak and Adams House was built. The Norcross House was built. The J. Warrick Norcross family owned and operated a recreation center and amusement park. The Old Park Church was originally built. The Baker Duff House was built. Frank E. Baker was a photographer.
In 1885, the Town of Greeley was officially incorporated. The Haynes House was built. Harry N. Haynes was an attorney, with expertise in western water law. He also served on the school board, as the city attorney and as the county attorney.
In 1886, Greeley was incorporated as a city and electric lights were installed. In 1887, the Sterling House was built. Asa Sterling was the President of First National Bank and was involved in the towns irrigation development.
In 1888, the Gale House was built. C.A. Gale was coal miner, and served as a deputy assessor and County Clerk for Weld County. The Currier Carriage House was built. George Currierserved as City Treasurer, Weld County Treasurer and Treasurer of the School Board.
In 1889, the University of Northern Colorado was established. In 1895, the Greeley Central High School was founded. In 1895, the Oberg/McAfee House was built. Samuel McAfee was a farmer.
In 1902, the Great Western Sugar Beet Factory was established and made sugar beet processing a key industry. In 1903, the Glazier House was built. Irvin O. Glazier was jeweler and musician, wand active in the First Baptist Church. In 1904, the North Colorado Medical Center opened.
In 1906, David A. Camfield purchased the Oasis Hotel and refurbished it, adding another floor and created the Camfield Hotel. The Coronado commercial building was built. The Harvey D. Parker House was built. Harvey D. Parker. Parker was part owner of the Mosher and Parker Produce firm and he served on the State Board of Agriculture and as chairman of the reorganization committee of the Laramie-Poudre Irrigation System.
In 1907, the Pitts Smith House was built. Mr. Smith was a successful farmer. The Bradfield House was built. George H. Bradfield was a Judge, and served as Greeley City Attorney, Weld County Attorney, and as a justice on the Colorado Supreme Court.
In 1908, the Southard-Gillespie House was built for Samuel and Mary Southard. Samuel Southard was a Weld County Treasurer, a County Clerk and County Commissioner, and was active in the local mercantile business.
In 1909, the St. Peter’s Catholic Church was built. The George Evans House was built the grocery clerk George Evans and his family were the first to live there. The Shattuck House was built. Orville F. Shattuck was the Greeley city engineer. The Russell House was built. Russell was the General Manager of Gilcrest Lumber Company.
In 1910, the Carlson House was built by Carl J. Carlson who was a Swedish stonemason. In 1911, the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra was established. In 1912, the Camfield House was built. David A. Camfield was businessman and developer who shaped the region through irrigation, real estate, and banking.
In 1917, the Weld County Courthouse was built. The Bliss House was built. Walter E. Bliss was an attorney. In 1922, KFKA radio began broadcasting. It was one of the first licensed radio stations in the U.S. In 1927, the Greeley Central High School was built. The Masonic Temple was built.
In 1928, the Greeley Municipal Airport was built. In 1929, the Tribune Building was ompleted. Originally it hosted the Greeley Daily Tribune offices. In 1936, the Hereford House was built for Alma Hereford. Hereford was the owner of a ladies' ready-to-wear shop.
In 1938, the Junior High School was built. In 1943, the city Greeley hosted World War II POW camps for German and Italian prisoners. In 1945, the Milton Seaman Reservoir was completed for improved water storage. In 1967, the Aims Community College was founded.
In 1969, the construction of Boyd Lake Water Treatment Plant was completed. In 1975, the Bank of Colorado Arena opened on the University of Northern Colorado campus. In 1988, the Union Colony Civic Center opened. In 2024, a hailstorm and flood impacted parts of the city.
In 2026, there were 110,806 people living in the city.
