History Of Santa Ana - Timeline
Long before the first Europeans arrived, Native American groups lived in the area at least 12,000 years ago. Around 2,000 years ago, the Gabrielino Indians lived in the area.
In 1769, a Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà explored this area. The Portola expedition was a Spanish voyage that was the first recorded European exploration of the area. The Spanish established forts, missions and cattle herds.
In 1810, Jose Antonio Yorba was granted Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana by the Spanish governor for cattle grazing and farming. In 1868, Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana lands were subdivided which opened up the land for settlement.
In 1869, William Henry Spurgeon purchased land and lays out the townsite, and Santa Ana was founded. In 1870, the Santa Ana Cemetery was established. In 1877, the Southern Pacific Railroad extended its line from Los Angeles to Santa Ana. The Greenville Community Church was built.
In 1879, the Granville Spurgeon House was built. Granville Spurgeon was the brother of William Henry Spurgeon. Together they operated several businesses in the town.
In 1885, the original Dr. Raymond Smith House was built as a residence and medical office for Dr. J.A. Crane and his wife. The Shelton-Garnsey House was built. The first building for the First Christian Church of Santa Ana was built.
In 1886, Santa Ana was incorporated as a city, and the police department was established. In 1887, the Santa Fe Railroad arrived and triggered a real estate boom and the early town development accelerated.
In 1888, James and Robert McFadden built the Newport Beach wharf, facilitating local shipping. The McNeill-Basler House was built for George Edgar. The house changed owner many times but John McNeil, a successful farmer owned it for 70 years. The construction of the Episcopal Church-The Messiah began.
In 1889, the Howe-Waffle House was built. Dr. Willella Howe-Waffle was one of the first female physicians in California. In 1890, the Hewitt House was built. The city had horse-drawn streetcars. In 1891, Santa Ana and Newport Railway began its service. President Benjamin Harrison visited the city.
In 1894, The Ebell Society was organized. They were involved with community service, and with the promotion of education and the arts for women.
In 1898, the Kellogg House was built by Hiram Clay Kellogg as a wedding gift for his wife Helen. Hiram Clay Kellogg was a civil engineer, and surveyor. He was elected Orange County Surveyor and worked on flood control for the Santa Ana River. He also served as Chief Engineer for the Anaheim Union Water Company, and laid out the town site of Elsinore, and designed the Corona town layout.
In 1900, the Miles Crookshank House was built. Miles Crookshank was president of Santa Ana's First National Bank. In 1901, the Old Orange County Courthouse was completed. The Collins House was built. In 1902, the Mosbaugh-Loerch House was built for Dr. Henry Mosbaugh. In 1903-07, the Claycomb House was built.
In 1905, Santa Ana Daily Register newspaper was in print. In 1909, the original United Presbyterian Church was built. In 1910, Glenn L. Martin of Santa Ana built and flied his own airplane.
In 1911, the Martin R. Heninger House was built. Martin R. Heninger was a prominent master builder and developer. He developed the large area between First Street, McFadden Avenue, Sycamore Street, and Flower Street.
In 1912, the Auditorium Theatre was built. Glenn L. Martin founded his first aviation company in the city, contributing to early aerospace industry roots. The Pomeroy House was built.
In 1913, the Spurgeon Building was built. Tt was the tallest building in the city at the time, with a domed Swiss clock tower on the northeast corner. In 1914, the Twist-Basler home was built. In 1915, Junior College opened. The Frederick Eley House was built. Frederick Eley was an architect who designed more than 30 schools and many other buildings.
In 1917, the Rankin's Department Store opened in the Rutherford Building. In 1922, KFAW radio began broadcasting. The Franklin Elementary School opened. In 1923, the Southern Counties Gas Company building was constructed.
In 1924, the Walker Theatre opened, and the Grand Central Building was constructed. Toastmasters International was founded, by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, dedicated to help people improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills. The Dr. Wehrly House was built. Dr. Wehrly was Orange County Physician and Health Officer. The Ebell Clubhouse was built.
In 1925, the Central Police and Fire Alarm building was completed. In 1926, the Haddon Court-Las Casitas Court complex was built. In 1928, the water tower was constructed. The Santora Building was built. In 1930, The Edward and Desa Wagner House was built. In 1931, the constructionof the Masonic Temple was completed.
In 1933, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake caused significant damage to the city. In 1935, the Santa Ana Independent newspaper was published. In 1936, the Bowers Museum opened. In 1942, an Army Air Base opened as a training center for the United States Army Air Forces.
In 1943, the bassist Roy Estrada was born in the city. He was the original bassist of both Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, and Little Feat. In 1948, Orange Coast College opened. In 1952, the Zoo was founded in Prentice Park.
In 1958, the world famous actress Michelle Pfeiffer was born in the city. The Fashion Square Mall and Honer Plaza opened. In 1960, there were 100,350 people living in the city. In 1964, the current United Presbyterian Church was built.
In 1983, the Discovery Science Center was founded. (The Discovery Cube Orange County). In 1987, the MainPlace Mall opened. In 1990, there were 293,742 people living in the city. In 1998, the construction of the Ronald Reagan Federal Building and Courthouse was completed.
In 2026, there were 316,184 people living in the city.
