San Bernardino, California


San Bernardino is located in the southern part and is the 18th largest city in the U.S. State of California. It is the birthplace of the fast-food industry. In 1940, the first McDonald's in the world opened in the city.

History Of San Bernardino - Timeline


For thousands of years, indigenous habitation, Serrano peoples, and Tongva lived in the area. In 1772, the Spanish soldier Pedro Fages was the first recorded European who explored the area. In 1776, the Franciscan missionary Father Francisco Garces explored the area. He mapped vast areas of California.

In 1810, the Spanish settled in the area. The settlement was originally established as a Spanish mission chapel and supply station. The Spanish missionary Father Francisco Dumetz named the area San Bernardino. In 1812, the settlement was destroyed by local indigenous tribes following earthquakes, but it was later rebuilt.

In 1819, San Gabriel Mission establishes an outpost. In 1851, Mormon settlers purchased land and establish a settlement. The Mormons laid out the town and built Fort San Bernardino, a massive stockade enclosure measuring roughly 750 feet by 320 feet.In 1852, Colonel Henry Washington erected the San Bernardino Base and Meridian survey monument.

In 1854, San Bernardino was incorporated as a city. In 1857, Most of the Mormon settlers were recalled to Utah by Brigham Young, their religious leader, and the city was disincorporated.

In 1863, the Great Drought killed most cattle in the area. In 1865, a church was built. In 1874, a courthouse was established. In 1878, a fire department was founded. In 1882, Julia and Joseph Meyer arrived and started a wine grape business. The Civic Light Opera building was built.

In 1883, the first railroad arrived. The California Southern Railroad put the city on the map and caused its population to grow rapidly. The San Bernardino High School was established.

In 1886, San Bernardino was reincorporated as a city. The original Santa Fe Depot building was built. In 1888: The LDS (Community of Christ) church was dedicated. In 1890, the Patton State Hospital sanitarium was founded. In 1894, the Sun newspaper was in print, and a library was established.

In 1901, a City Hall opened. In 1902, the San Bernardino Valley Traction Company was formed and the city had electric trolleys. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt visited the city. In 1905, Harris Company department store opened. The San Bernardino Police Department was founded.

In 1910, the St. Bernardine Church was built. In 1918, the Santa Fe Depot building was rebuilt. In 1923, an earthquake damaged parts of the city. In 1924, the original Orange Pavilion was built. In 1925, future President Lyndon B. Johnson worked as an elevator operator in the Platt Building in downtown.

In 1926, the San Bernardino Valley College was established. In 1927, a County Courthouse was built. In 1928, the Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral was built. The California Theatre of the Performing Arts opened. In 1929, the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra was founded. KFXM radio station began its broadcastsing.

In 1931, the US Post Office-Downtown Station was built. In 1934, Fiscalini Field stadium opened. In 1940, The first McDonald's in the world opened in the city. Richard and Maurice McDonald called their restaurant McDonald's Bar-B-Q.

In 1941, Dorothy Inghram became the first African American teacher in the city when she was hired. She taught, served as principal and eventually became district superintendent. In 1942, Norton Air Force Base opened.

In 1948, Richard and Maurice McDonald introduced their Speedee Service System at McDonald's. Glen Bell started Taco Bell, "Bell's Drive-In", in the city. In 1949, the original Orange Pavilion was destroyed in a fire. The Wigwam Motel was built.

In 1950, the Orange Pavilion was rebuilt. In 1952, Neal Baker founded his restaurant and opened the first Baker's Drive Thru. In 1956, Immanuel Baptist Church dedicated its first building. In 1962, KVCR public television began broadcasting in the city.

In 1965, California State College, San Bernardino opened. In 1972, the Inland Regional Center opened. In 1973, a new city hall opened. In 1976, Omnitrans was established. 1978, the latin church, the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino, was founded.

In 1980, the Panorama Fire, a wildfire, killed four people and destroyed 284 homes and damaged many more buildings. In 1995, the Coussoulis Arena opened. In 1996, the San Manuel Stadium opened. The Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art was established. In 1998, the original McDonald's Museum opened.

In 2008, the History and Railroad Museum opened. In 2012, the city went bankrupt. In 2015, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik perpetrated a terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center. They shot and killed 14 people and injured 22. The perpetrators were later killed by police.

In 2017, the city emerged from bankruptcy. In 2026, there were 224,775 people living in the city.
