History Of Riverside - Timeline


Native American groups lived in the area long before the first Europeans arrived. In 1774, Juan Bautista de Anza, from Mexico, led an expedition through the area. In 1775, once again Juan Bautista de Anza explored the area and named it Valle de Paraiso (Valley of Paradise).

In 1838, the area was part of Mexican rancho grants. In 1862, the Trujillo Adobe was built by Lorenzo Trujillo. In 1868, Thomas Wells Cover purchased part of Rancho Rubidoux. Thomas Wells Cover was a gold rush veteran and a prominent pioneer, orchardist, and land developer crucial to early Riverside, helping the establishment.

In 1869, the California Silk Center Association was established. The association bought 4,000 acres which now is a part of Riverside.

In 1870, Riverside was founded by John Wesley North, a lawyer, and politician. He purchased some of its land and formed the Southern California Colony Association and began to purchase more land to establish a settlement. They first named the settlement Jurupa but renamed it Riverside a couple of month later.

In 1871, the first irrigation canal was completed, and the first orange trees were planted. In 1872, the Evergreen Cemetery was established and the first burial occurred.

In 1873, Eliza Tibbets received Brazilian Washington navel orange trees, which thrived and launched Riverside’s citrus boom. In 1875, the town was surveyed and laid out, and the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived. In 1876, Christopher Columbus Miller opened Glenwood Cottage as a small boarding house.

In 1880, Frank Miller, Christopher Columbus Miller's son, took over the Glenwood Cottages. In 1882, the town had 250,000 citrus trees planted.

In 1883, Riverside was incorporated as a city. In 1887, a Fire Department was established. In 1888, the city had electric streetlights. In 1891, the Universalist Unitarian Church of Riverside was built. The Heritage House was built for Mrs. Catherine Bettner, a widow of the citrus farmer and lawyer James Bettner.

In 1892, the Perris Indian School opened. Victoria Avenue was developed to connect the Arlington Heights area to downtown Riverside. The road later became a popular tourist attraction. In 1895, Riverside was listed as the wealthiest city per capita in the United States. In 1896, the Police Departmentwas founded.

In 1900, there were 8,000 people living in the city. In 1901, The First Church of Christ, Scientist was built, and Sherman Indian High School was established. The Riverside Community Hospital was founded. In 1902, the Glenwood Cottage name was changed to Glenwood Mission Inn. Many U.S. presidents and celebrities have visited the inn. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt was the first President who stayed at the Mission Inn.

In 1904, the Riverside station opened. In 1906, the University of California established a Citrus Experiment Station in Riverside. In 1908, the Arlington Branch Library and Fire Hall was built. The Masonic Temple was constructed, It served as a center for local Masonry and, later, various commercial uses.

In 1910, the William Childs house was built. William Childs was a businessman and inventor who had invented telephone and telegraph equipment. In 1912, the downtown Riverside Federal Post Office was completed. The packing house, that was leased out to the Sutherland Fruit Company, was built.

In 1913, the First Congregational Church of Riverside was built. The Harada House was built. Jukichi Harada was a Japanese immigrant and restaurateur in Riverside, famous for challenging the discriminatory California Alien Land Law of 1913.

In 1925, the M. H. Simon's Undertaking Chapel was built. Melvin H. Simons was a businessman, active in local affairs, and served as president of the Rotary Club. In 1928, the Riverside Municipal Auditorium and Soldiers' Memorial Building opened. The University Heights Junior High School was established.

In 1929, the Fox Theater was built. The Riverside Art Museum building was constructed. The building was originally built to serve the Young Women's Christian Association.

In 1939, the Fox Theater hosted the first-ever, surprise sneak preview of Gone with the Wind. In 1950, there were 46,399 people living in the city. In 1954, the University of California, Riverside opened. In 1956, the The Riverside Plaza, originally a outdoor mall, was built.

In 1957, the Riverside International Raceway opened. It was a famous motorsports venue. In 1963, the UC Riverside Botanic Gardens opened. In 1964, the Van Buren Drive-In Theatre opened. In 1966, the Riverside Pedestrian Mall opened. In 1976, the Riverside National Cemetery was established.

In 1990, the first Festival of Trees was held. In 1991, the James W. Totman Baseball Stadium opened. In 1993, the California Citrus State Historic Park was established. In 1999, the I Have a Dream statue was installed. In 2007, the Riverside Sports Complex was built. In 2009, Fox Theater reopened after a restoration. In 2014, the Riverside Convention Center opened.

In 2017, the Fowler Events Center opened. Mr. Totman was a general contractor and was involved in construction of more than 800 apartments, and offices. In 2026, there were 323,757 people living in the city.
