Modesto is located in the central part and is the 19th largest city in the U.S. State of California. It is the hometown of filmmaker George Lucas, and the actor Jeremy Renner.

History Of Modesto - Timeline
For thousands of years, indigenous habitation lived in the area. In the early 1800s the area was inhabited by the Yokuts, who utilized the region's rivers and resources.
In 1808, the Spanish Lieutenant Gabriel Moraga explored the area. In 1852, Robert McHenry purchased land where he was farming and cattle ranching. In 1865, the Luke A. Church House was originally constructed.
In 1869, Ebenezer "Eben" Wood purchased land, and built a small frame house, with the goal to establish a farming community.
In 1870, Modesto was founded as a village when the Central Pacific Railroad purchased land and layed out the town. Tuolumne City News newspaper reached the town. In 1871, the town became county seat of Stanislaus County and a key rail transport hub. In 1872, the construction of the Stanislaus County Courthouse started.
In 1874, a brick schoolhouse was built. In 1875, a volunteer Fire Department was established. The Modesto Herald newspaper was in print. In 1878, the St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic parish was originally built. In 1883, Robert McHenry built his McHenry Mansion. Modesto High School was established.
In 1884, Modesto was incorporated as a city. The Daily Evening News was published. In 1885, Robert McHenry founded the First National Bank of Modesto. In 1901, a high school building was completed. In 1906, 466 addresses had telephone. In 1911, the city's first official Chief of Police, Robert Layne Dallas, was appointed.
In 1912, the McHenry Public Library opened. The construction of the Modesto Arch bearing the motto “Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health, was erected. In 1913, the Modesto Theatre opened. The current structure of the St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic parish was completed and dedicated.
In 1915, a new Southern Pacific train station opened. In 1921, the Modesto Junior College was founded. In 1930, Modesto Symphony Orchestra was founded. In 1933, the main post office was built. Ernest and Julio Gallo started the E & J Gallo Winery Winery. KTRB radio station went on the air.
In 1934, the State Theatre opened. In 1938, the Hall of Records building was completed. In 1944, the filmmaker George Lucas was born in the city. In 1948, President Harry S. Truman visited the city and held a speech at Modesto's train station. In 1950, the former swimmer and nine-time Olympic champion Mark Spitz was born in the city.
In 1954, KOVR tv station began broadcasting in the city. In 1971, the actor Jeremy Renner was born in the city. In 1973, George Lucas releases American Graffiti, based on his youth in the city. In 2007, the Gallo Center for the Arts opened.
In 2026, there were 220,592 people living in the city.
