History Of Fremont - Timeline


The area that would become Fremont was inhabited for thousands of years by the Ohlone Indigenous people.

In 1797, Mission San Jose was founded by the Spanish Franciscan Father Fermin de Lasuen. In 1841, a flour mill was built. In 1842, Vallejo Adobe (within the California Nursery Historical Park) was built by Jose de Jesus Vallejo, the administrator of Mission San Jose.

In 1846, John C. Fremont, later the city's namesake, led an expedition mapping trails through Mission Pass during U.S. expansion after the Mexican-American War. In 1849, George Patterson arrived to find gold. Later he established the agricultural lands that became Ardenwood Historic Farm.

In 1850, a post office was established. The area grew with increased migration, agriculture, and supply activity as California's Gold Rush boomed. In 1851, Elias Beard and Henry Smith established general stores and restaurants. In 1852, Capt. George Bond opened a store.

In 1853, Washington Township was established by the settlers. In 1854, Mr. Clemens opened a store. In 1856, George Patterson bought his first plot of land. James and Lucy Shinn established a ranch. In 1857, the George Patterson House was built on Ardenwood Historic Farm. In 1858, the United States Hotel opened.

In 1866, the Union Pacific Railroad laid railroad tracks through Fremont. In 1869, the Leland Stanford Winery was founded. In 1970, a post office was establiched. In 1871, Washington College was founded. In 1876, the Shinn House was built by James and Lucy Shinn. In 1881, Juan Gallegos purchased the Palmdale property in the Mission San Jose area of Fremont and established the Palmdale Winery.

In 1901, the Niles Depot was built by the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1921, the Cloverdale Sanitary Dairy opened. In 1927, the Dumbarton Bridge opened. In 1928, a library opened. In 1956, Fremont was incorporated. Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, Niles, and Warm Springs merged to form the City of Fremont. A post office opened. Fremont Airport was established.

In 1962, Central Park opened. Miss Olive Hyde donated the building to The Olive Hyde Art Gallery. In 1963, General Motors opened a major assembly plant. In 1965, Ohlone College was established. In 1968, the City Government Building was completed.

In 1969, Lake Elizabeth was created. In 1972, Fremont BART Station opened. In 1984, Apple opened its first Macintosh computer manufacturing plant. In 1985, the Ardenwood Historic Farm opened to the public. In 1989, the Library Building opened. In 1996, the Police Building was completed. The Washington Township Museum opened.

In 2005, the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum was established. In 2009, the Aqua Adventure Waterpark opened. In 2010, Tesla Motors purchased the former NUMMI automobile factory. In 2026, there were 228,192 people living in the city.
