History Of Fontana - Timeline


For thousands of years, indigenous habitation, Gabrieleno and Serrano tribes, and Tongva lived in the area. In 1772, the Spanish soldier Pedro Fages was the first recorded European who explored the area. In 1776, the Franciscan missionary Father Francisco Garces explored the area. He mapped vast areas of California.

In 1842: the land was part of the Rancho San Bernardino land grant. In 1880, Perdew School was established. The education began in a shared community facility that also served as a church and social center.

In 1890, the Southern California Railroad established a station and a town they named Rosena. In 1895, the Construction of a school building was completed. In 1903, the area was developed by the Fontana Development Company.

In 1905: Azariel Blanchard Miller purchased land in Rosena and began major agricultural development with citrus orchards, poultry farms, livestock, and water systems. In 1906, the Construction of the Fontana Farms Company Ranch House, Camp No. 1 was completed.

In 1913, Rosena was renamed Fontana and the town was formally founded by Azariel Blanchard Miller. Sierra Way School opened. Finnish immigrants, led by Tom Tuomi, established an agricultural community.

In 1915, a freight depot of the Pacific Electric Railway was built. In 1923, the Fontana Herald News weekly newspaper was founded. In 1925, the Pagliuso Family Chapel was built.

The Al Capone house was built. The estate on Tamarind Avenue is widely rumored to have been a secret West Coast hideout for mobster Al Capone. In 1926, the Fontana Community Church was built. In 1928, The U.S. Rabbit Experimental Station opened. It was the only rabbit breeding/raising research facility in the U.S. Fontana Middle School opened.

In 1937, the Center Stage Theater was built. In 1942, Henry J. Kaiser opened the Kaiser Steel Mill. In 1943, Bono's Restaurant and Deli opened along Route 66. The first hospital was established as part of the Kaiser Fontana Medical Center. In 1952, the city of Fontana was officially incorporated. The Fontana High School was established.

In 1955, Oleander Elementary School was established. In 1957, Poplar Elementary School was established. In 1974, the Fontana Historical Society was founded. In 1996, the construction of the Auto Club Speedway (California Speedway) was completed. It was a D-shaped oval superspeedway that hosted NASCAR Cup Series races and various motorsports events.

In 1997, Auto Club Speedway opened. In 1998, Dr. Charles A. Koehler Park was dedicated. In 2008, the Fontana Park Aquatic Center opened. The construction of the Fontana Lewis Library and Technology Center was completed. In 2026, there were 218,455 people living in the city.
