History Of Chula Vista - Timeline


3000 year ago, Yuman-speaking peoples, ancestors of the Kumeyaay, lived the area. In 1542, the Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo arrived and claimed the region for Spain. In 1831, the area ruled under Mexican governance. In 1847, California was claimed by the United States.

In 1868, Frank, Warren and Levi Kimball acquired Rancho de la Nacion. They aimed to transform the former Mexican cattle ranch into productive, American-style, developed settlements.

In 1887, the San Diego Land and Town Company created Chula Vista, and the first house was erected. The construction of the Albert Barber House began. Louise and Albert Barber purchased the very first tract of land in Chula Vista. The construction of the Hancil Cordrey House began. It is one of the few remaining original Victorian-era orchard homes from the city's early development.

In 1888, The Sweetwater Dam was completed which provided for Chula Vista farming lands. The civil engineer, James Dix Schuyler, designed and completeted the Sweetwater Dam. He also suggested the name Chula Vista for the new town. The Santa Fe Railway arrived. The Jenny McDonald House was built by the San Diego Land and Town Co. as part of a boom-era effort to attract settlers. William and Jennie MacDonald later purchased the home.

In 1889, ten houses had been completed, and Frank Kimball discovered that citrus thrived in the area. The climate was found perfect for lemons. The Otay Watch Company was established. The Chula Vista Yacht Club was founded.

In 1890, the Community Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) was established. In 1894, the Chula Vista Fruit Association was formed. The Frank Howe House was built. In 1896, the Augusta Starkey House was built. Augusta Starkey and her husband, Harold Bellamy Starkey lived in the home for over 60 years. Harold founded the First Federal Savings and Loan.

In 1897, the Allison Crockett House was built. Allison Crockett was a Civil War veteran, and carpenter. The John Howe House was built. In 1900, the Skinner House was built.

In 1911, Chula Vista was incorporated as a city, and a police department was established. Abraham Eitzen bought Louise and Albert Barber's house. Abraham Eitzen served as a Chula Vista City Councilman. The Greg Rogers House was completed. Greg Rogers co-founded the city's first financial institution, People's State Bank, and served as the first commodore of the Chula Vista Yacht Club.

In 1915 a library was built. In 1916, several residents were killed a flood from Lower Otay Dam destroyed infrastructure. The Chula Vista Citrus Association was organized. The Hercules Powder Company established a 30-acre plant. They converted kelp harvested into acetone, a solvent needed to make cordite (a British smokeless gunpowder).

In 1920, San Diego Country Club opened. In 1921, a Fire Department was formally organized. St. Rose of Lima Parish was established. In 1940, Rohr Aircraft Corporation was founded. The city purchased the Chula Vista Airport for Rohr Aircraft. In 1945, the Vogue Theater opened.

In 1951, the new City Hall was built. In 1955, the Big Ski Drive-In opened. With a 2,000-car capacity, it was one of the nation's largest drive-in theaters. In 1962, Chula Vista Center Shopping Mall opened. In 1971, McDonald's in the city, was the first to have an amusement commercial playground attached to a McDonald's restaurant.

In 1987, the Nature Interpretive Center opened. (Living Coast Discovery Center). In 1988, the current St. Pius X Parish building was completed. In 1995, the Olympic Training Center opened. In 2006, the Otay Ranch Town Center opened as an open-air shopping center. In 2026, there were 278,546 people living in the city.
