Anaheim, California


Anaheim is located in the south-western part and is the 10th largest city in the U.S. State of California. It is a major sport city with the Los Angeles Angels of MLB and the Anaheim Ducks of the NHL. The Mighty Ducks were actually founded by The Walt Disney Company.

The city a major tourist, and business hub. You can visit the Disneyland Resort, and the Anaheim Convention Center. The convention center hosts hundreds of events annually. Corporate events, banquets, social events, trade shows, concerts, and more. In the city you can find award-winning breweries, and cultural districts.

History Of Anaheim - Timeline


Long before the first white settlers came, the land belonged to the Gabrielino-Tongva people. They had lived there since 3500 BCE. In 1769, Lieutenant Pedro Fages explored the area that is modern-day Anaheim. In 1837, the area became part of the Rancho San Juan Cajón de Santa Ana land grant, given to Juan Pacífico Ontiveros by the Mexican governor.

In 1857, George Hansen led 50 German families and bought 1,160 acres land, from Juan Pacífico Ontiveros, to farm and to form a wine-making colony. George Hansen surveyed the site for the new colony and named the place Annaheim. The Planter's Hotel opened. The Mother Colony House was built by George Hansen as his office and home. It is the oldest surviving home in Anaheim.

In 1859, the Water Company was founded. In 1860, the first schoolhouse opened. In 1861, a post office was established. In 1862, a flood, four feet deep in Anaheim, destroyed many buildings. In 1867, there were 47 wineries in the colony. In 1869, the schoolhouse was rebuilt, and the St. Boniface Catholic Church, was constructed.

In 1870, the City of Anaheim was incorporated, the Anaheim Police Department was established, and the Anaheim Gazette newspaper was published. The original Anaheim Brewery opened. In 1871, a City Hall was built. In 1872, Anaheim was dis-incorporated due to high taxes. The original Anaheim Hotel was built, and the Presbyterian church was built. The fire department was organized.

In 1875, a railway line was built. In 1876, the Bank of Anaheim and was organized. In 1878, Anaheim was again incorporated, and the California Brewery opened for business. In 1880, wine production was up to 1.25 million gallons of wine and more than 100,000 gallons of brandy. In 1887, horse-drawn streetcars operated in the city. The construction of the Santa Fe depot began.

In 1895, the city had electric lights. In 1896, the Woelke-Stoffel House was built. John Woelke was a successful restauranteur. In 1900, there were 1,456 people living there. In 1902, the Anaheim Public Library was established. In 1909, Leo Fenderwas born in the city. He was an inventor and founder of the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. (The Fender Telecaster, the Fender Stratocaster, and more). The Carnegie Library opened.

In 1916, the Wohlgemuth House was built. It had 50 year-old 4-ton cactus planted on the property. In 1917, the Anaheim Theatre opened. In 1919, the Packing House building was completed. In 1921, the Fox Theatre opened. (Originally the California Theatre). In 1924, the first Anaheim Halloween Parade took place. The Ku Klux Klan held a rally with over 20,000 people. Four members of the Ku Klux Klan were elected to Anaheim's five-member board of trustees. That gave KKK control of city government.

In 1925, The four representatives of the Ku Klux Klan were recalled in a election. In 1926, the Carl Karcher House was built. Carl Karcher was the foundeder of the Carl's Jr. hamburger chain, and bought the house in 1949. In 1927, the City Park (Pearson Park) opened. In 1929, the Kraemer Building was completed. It was built by the oil-rich Samuel Kraemer. In 1935, a Post Office building was constructed. (The building has been demolished).

In 1936, the Cook Auditorium theater opened. In 1950, the population was 14,556. In 1955, the Disneyland Amusement Park opened, and the opening was televised. In 1959, KEZY (1190 AM) radio began broadcasting. In 1960, The city had over 104,000 residents. The opening of Disneyland attracted new residents, businesses, and tourists. In 1966, the Anaheim Stadium opened. (Angel Stadium). The session guitarist, and singer-songwriter, Jeff Buckley, was born in the city.

In 1967, the Anaheim Convention Center opened. Originally home to the Anaheim Amigos of the ABA. In 1968, Fox Cinemaland theatre opened. In 1972, the Anaheim Hills Golf Course opened. In 1978, around 1,000 people rampaged outside City Hall. The smashed windows and set fire of businesses. 24 people were arrested on July 21, and 9 people in July 29. The riot began after the police were involved in a shooting, and killed Manuel Diaz and later Joel Acevedo.

In 1981, the Anaheim Marriott Hotel opened. In 1986, the band No Doubt was formed in Anaheim. In 1987, the Anaheim Museum was established. In 1993, the Mighty Ducks ice hockey team was formed. Founded by the Walt Disney Company. The Honda Center indoor arena opened, home to the Ducks. In 2002, the baseboll team Anaheim Angels won the World Series championship (MBL).

In 2007, the Anaheim Ducks and won the Stanley Cup. The Muzeo complex opened. (Muzeo Museum And Cultural Center). In 2025, there were 344,561 people living in the city.
