History Of Scottsdale - Timeline


Thousands of years before the first white settler came, the land was part of the expansive territory inhabited by ancient Native American cultures, most notably the Hohokam, who developed sophisticated irrigation canals from the Salt River.

In 1873, The Arizona Canal was built through the Scottsdale area. In 1877, The Desert Land Act of 1877 made land available for agricultural development. The region was identified as having high potential for agriculture, specifically for citrus.

In 1875, the Frank Tilus House was built. Frank Tilus was an early settler and the house is one of the area's oldest structures. In 1885, U.S. Army Chaplain Winfield Scott visited the Salt River Valley and the areas potential for agriculture.

In 1888, Winfield Scott purchased 640 acres of land near present-day downtown for agriculture. He and his wife, Helen, were the first who settled in the area. In 1889, George Washington Scott, brother to Winfield, also settled and cleared land and planted crops.

In 1894, the banker Albert G. Utley bought a section of land. He subdivided 40 acres into a 208-lot townsite, to plat a new town. He decided to call the town Orangedale. An article published in the Arizona Republican erroneously referred to Utley's "Orangedale" as "Scottsdale". After the article came out, Utley officially changed the name from Orangedale to Scottsdale.

In 1896, a schoolhouse opened. In 1897, J.L. Davis built a wood frame building and opened the J.L. Davis General Store and Post Office.

In 1909, George Cavalliere opened the Cavalliere's Blacksmith Shop in downtown, and the Ingleside Inn opened. It was the region's first resort. Marjorie Thomas settled in the town and initiating the town's rich art scene. Marjorie Thomas was a painter trained at the Boston Museum School and she is known for her Indian paintings, animal and desert scene paintings.

In 1911, Jessie Benton Evans and his family moved to the town. He was an impressionist painter, known for depicting the Arizona landscape. In 1913, the Charles Miller House was built. Charles Miller was a farmer, and civic leader in the town. In 1920, the Jokake Inn was opened by Jessie Benton Evans.

In 1921, the Sterling Drug Store was built by Dr. Walter S. Lawson. In 1922, Roy George published the Scottsdale Bulletin newspaper. He was a playwright and author. In 1923, Scottsdale High School was built. Johnny Rose's Pool Hall was built. It was a pool hall which also served as a community hub, educational space, and a site of local scandal.

In 1924, the Methodist Church is established. In 1929, a U.S. Post Office Building was built. In 1933, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church was built. (The Old Adobe Mission). In 1942, the Thunderbird Field II was built. It trained pilots from foreign countries and US Army pilots. In 1947, the Arizona Craft Center was established. The Village Patio opened. It was the shopping center in the town.

In 1948, a Fire Department was established. In 1950, Motorola opened a plant. The Western Motor Service building was built. In 1951, Scottsdale was incorporates as a city. In 1953, the Lu Lu Belle Building was built. It operated as a saloon and steakhouse. In 1954, a second Motorola plant was opened. The Sprouse-Reitz Drugstore building was built. It was known for affordable household goods, candy, and toys.

In 1956, the Hotel Valley Ho, and the Safari Hotel opened. The Scottsdale Stadium opened. In 1959, Paul and Kora Messinger opened their first funeral home, the Messinger Mortuary. In 1961, Goldwaters' Department Store opened. The Scottsdale Fashion Square Shopping Mall was built. In 1962, the Baptist Hospital was built. In 1967, the Eldorado Park was built.

In 1968, the City Hall was built and theCivic Center Library opened. In 1969, Los Arcos Mall opened. In 1970, the Scottsdale Community College opened. The Rawhide Western Town was established. It was a 1880s-themed attraction, featuring stagecoach rides and gunfights. In 1973, the Scottsdale Senior Center was built.

In 1974, the Scottsdale Symphony was formed. In 1985, United Cable Television brought cable television to the city. In 1987, the WestWorld of Scottsdale, a multi-use events facility, was built.

In 1988, the world famous actress Emma Stone was born in the city. In 1992, the rebuilt Scottsdale Stadium opened. In 2016, the OdySea Aquarium opened. In 2026, there were 246,170 people living in the city.
