History Of Chandler - Timeline


Thousands of years before the first white settler came, the area was inhabited by the Hohokam people.

In 1891, Dr. Alexander John Chandler settled in the area and purchased land from the federal government to develop a ranch. He began an extensive ad vertising program designed to attract settlers to the area. In 1911, families who saw the ads were eager to take advantage of the fertile lands and to move to the area the following year. Dr. Alexander John Chandler was the first veterinary surgeon in Arizona.

In 1912, the townsite of Chandler was founded and Dr. Chandler opened the townsite office. Ernest and Leroy Morrison opened the first grocery in the town. The Monroe Building was completed.The building was designed for small shops with offices on the second floor. The Dobson Building was built. John H. Dobson was a financier and a businessman, and he established the First National Bank in the town. The Chandler Arizonan newspaper was published.

In 1913, Hotel San Marcos opened. It was one of the first exclusive resort hotels in the refion. The the Bank of Chandler was built. Dr. Kramer M. Gilbert came to Chandler and set up his practice in a tent. He was the only physician in the town. The Edwards House was built by Will and Grace Robinson. Will Robinson was an author who documented local history and Native American culture. He also desiged the original San Marcos Golf Course. Grace Robinson was a hostess and manager at the Hotel San Marcos.

In 1914, Chandler High School was established and the Price Building was built. Arthur E. Price, was an attorney and Justice of the Peace. The Andersen Building was built. John Anderson was a rancher and a businessman.

In 1916, the Suhwaro Hotel was built. In 1917, the Goodyear Cotton Ranch House was built. It served as the headquarters for managing land bought for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. A fire protection for the town was established.

In 1917, The McCroskey House was built. It is known as a catalog, or kit house, or a farm bungalow. It was ordered from a catalog and came in many pieces. In 1918, the Arrow Pharmacy building was constructed. John B. "Doc" Weber operated Weber's Arrow Pharmacy. Around 1,200 people now lived in the town.

In 1919, John Dobson built his house and he established the First National Bank. Alva T. Morgareidge built the Reliable Hardware Store Building and opened the store. Morgareidge was also a member of the Chandler Town Council and the Chandler School Board. The Friedberg Building was built and opened by merchant Joseph Friedberg as a clothing and dry goods store. The Gilbert Building was built. It served as a permanent medical office for Dr. Gilbert. The Esber Store Building was built.

In 1920, Chandler was incorporated as a city. The Rowena Theater Building was built. It was the first silent movie theater in the city. In 1922, Chandler High School opened for students. In 1923, the Police Department was established, and a city hall was built. In 1928, the McCormick Building was built as the original IOOF Hall and Armory, It was a central hub for community meetings, and fraternal organizations.

In 1929, the Winn School opened. In 1932, Ike and Eddie Basha Sr. opened the Basha's Grocery Store. It was the first of the Basha's Suipermarket chain in Arizona. In 1938, the McCullough-Price House was built for William D. McCullough as a as a winter residence. In 1947, The O.S. Stapley Hardware Store was built.

In 1950, the Chandler Regional Medical Center was founded. In 1983, the Arizona Railway Museum was founded. In 1984, the Lavender Farm at Chateau de Vie was built by Phil and Billy Lee Erickson. Phil Erickson was a founder of the Erickson Framing Company. In 1989, Chandler Center for the Arts opened. In 2011, Intel began to build its microprocessor manufacturing facility in the city. In 2023, the Lavender Farm officially opened to the public. In 2025, there were 281,231 people living in the city.
