History Of Waterbury - Timeline


Long before the first European came to the region it was inhabited by the Paugussett Native American nation. The area was known as Matetacoke.

In 1650, settlers attempted to farm in the area but they failed due to the remote location, disputes with local indigenous populations, and challenging terrain.

In 1674, a second attempt to settle the area were made by English colonists, who formally started to clear land, layout home lots, and establish a plantation. In 1675, the settlement was abandoned due to King Philip's War.

In 1678, in the summer, a third attempt to settle the area were made. Most of the settlers who erlier tried to settle the area returned. A few houses, constructed of logs, were erected and the village was called Mattatuck. The village streets were laid out.

In 1679, more settlers arrived and built houses, and cleared land for a town and for farming. In 1681, Abraham Andruss and Timothy Stanley were the first townsmen, or selectmen of the town.

In 1686, the Town of Waterbury was official incorporated. The name was chosen to reflect the area's geography, and the numerous streams that flowed into the Naugatuck River. In 1691, a major flood of the Naugatuck River caused damages to the town and the struggling farming community. The First Congregational Church was founded.

In 1704, the General Court of Connecticut officially recognized Waterbury as a frontier town. It was considered crucial to the colony's defense and was not to be deserted during Queen Anne's War. The Gaylord-Welton House was built by Joseph Gaylord, Jr. and his brother John. It is the oldest house in the city.

In 1712, an outbreak of a disease killed a significant portion of the population. In 1776, the resident Moses Dunbar was executed for treason during the American Revolution.

In 1795, Waterbury was reduced from its original size of roughly 130 square miles to about 28.2 square miles because its surrounding areas chose to incorporate as separate, independent towns following the Revolutionary War. In 1797, a Drug Store was established.

In 1801, the residences had water. Mark Leavenworth started a steel products company. In 1802, Abel and Levi Porter, along with the Grilley brothers, established a partnership to manufacture brass buttons.

In 1809, Abel Porter and Co. built a large facility with water power, which solidified brass manufacturing in the region. In 1811, the Union Academy school building was erected. In 1812, Aaron Benedict founded Benedict and Burnham Manufacturing Co. which transformed the city into a brass manufacturing powerhouse.

In 1845, the Elisha Leavenworth House was built. Elisha Leavenworth was a successful businessman who operated the Waterbury Drug Store. In 1847, the Church of the Immaculate Conception was founded. In 1849, the Naugatuck Railroad was completed. In 1852, gas lighting was established in the city. In 1844, the Waterbury American newspaper was established.

In 1853, Waterbury was officially incorporated as a city. The Waterbury Police Department was established. The Riverside Cemetery was built. The Waterbury Clock Company factory was built. In 1854, the Fire Department was established. In 1857, the Waterbury Clock Company factory was built.

In 1858, Waterbury native Ezra J. Warner invented the first U.S. can opener. In 1860, the Armstrong-McDonald House was built. In 1865, a City Hall was built. The Chase Collegiate School was established.

In 1866, the John Kendrick House was completed. It was built by his father Green Kendrick, who was a politician and industrialist. John Kendrick was a lawyer, judge, and Mayor of Waterbury.

In 1868, the Silas Bronson Library was established. The Enoch Hibbard House and George Granniss Houses were completed. Enoch Hibbard was a merchant, tailor, and furniture maker. George Granniss was a successful photographer and an accomplished musician who played the melodeon for the Church of the Immaculate Conception and sang in the choir at St. John's Church.

In 1872, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, a Catholic church, was built. In 1873, the current structure of the St. John’s Episcopal Church was built. In 1874, the Matthews and Willard Factory was built. The company manufactured various brass goods.

In 1875, flood damaged parts of the city's infrastructure. In 1877, telephone lines were installed. The Mattatuck Historical Society was established. In 1878, the Chase Brass and Copper Company was founded.

In 1879, the Benedict-Miller House was built. Charles Benedict was a key figure in the city's brass industry through his association with the Benedict and Burnham Manufacturing Company. In 1881, the Washington Avenue Bridge was built.

In 1884, the city had electric lights. In 1885, the John Mullings House was built. John Mullings was local tailor and real estate speculator and owned a clothing store downtown. In 1886, the Bishop School was built. In 1890, the Post University was founded (as Post College).

In 1898, the Webster School was built. In 1899, the George S. Abbott Building was built. The American Brass Company was founded.

In 1900, there were 45,859 people living in the city. In 1902, a fire destroyed much of downtown. In 1903, the Stapleton Building was built. Frank Stapleton was a businessman and operated a popular saloon. In 1904, the Elton Hotel was built.

In 1907, the construction of the Saint Anne Church was completed. In 1909, the Union Station was built. In 1912, the City Hall was destroyed by fire. In 1915, a new City Hall was built. In 1918, hundreds of people died in the Spanish Influenza pandemic. In 1919, the Chase Headquarters Building was completed. The Wilby High School was built.

In 1922, the Palace Theater opened. In 1929, the Beth El Synagogue was built. In 1930, the Municipal Stadium opened as a dog track.

In 1949, the world famous portrait photographer Anna-Lou Leibovitz was born in the city. Her famous photograph of a naked John Lennon, curled up next to Yoko Ono on the floor, was taken just a few hours befor Lennon was murdered.

In 1953, the W.F. Kaynor Technical High School opened. In 1955, the Great Flood of 1955 caused widespread damage. Holy Land USA theme park opened.

In 1962, a tornado caused extensive destruction and casualtie. In 1980, there were 103,266 people living in the city. In 1990, the Seven Angels Theatre was founded. In 1993, the Waterbury Observer newpaper was published. In 1997, the Brass Mill Center shopping mall complex opened.

In 2026, there were 114,869 people living in the city.
