A Short History Of Orlando


Long before the first white people came, the Orlando region was inhabited by the American Indian tribe Timucua and later the Seminole people

In 1838, Fort Gatlin was built south of the present day Orlando City. In 1843, the first settler Mr. Aaron Jernigan and his wife arrived and Orlando was named "Jernigan". In 1850, the first post office opened. In 1856, the community officially changed name Jernigan to Orlando. In 1875, the Town of Orlando was incorporated. About 80 people now lived in the town.

In 1878, the first newspaper, "The Orange County Reporter", started. In 1880, the South Florida Railroad was built. In 1885, Orlando was incorporated as a city. In 1886, a mule-drawn streetcar line started in downtown. In 1891, St. James Cathedral was built. In 1900, the newspaper Florida Christian Recorder begins publication. In 1905, the City Hall was built.

In 1913, the Grand Theater opened. In, 1918, the Orange General Hospital opened. In 1920, about 9000 people lived in the city. In 1923, the Albertson Public Library started when Captain Charles L. Albertson, a retired Police Inspector of New York City and a winter resident of Orlando, offered his book collection to the town.

In 1928, Orlando Municipal Airport opened. In 1936, the Orlando Stadium opened. In 1949, theme park Gatorland opened. In 1956, the shopping mall Colonial Plaza opened. In 1958, WLOF-TV started. In 1971, Disney World opened.

In 1973, the SeaWorld theme park opened. In 1980, about 128,000 people lived in the city. In 1990, the Universal Orlando theme park opened. In 1991, the Orlando Predators football team started. In 2002, indoor shopping mall Millenia Mall opened.

In 2016, Omar Mateen, who identified himself as an "Islamic Soldier", killed 49 people and wounded 53 in a mass shooting at the nightclub Pulse. He was killed by the police. A couple of years earlier he had been investigated for terrorism by the FBI.
